This is a wake-up call to something we already know.  Our world is changing drastically and this means in ever increasing relation to how we make a living and how our children will make a living in the not so distant future.  There are two points that need addressed now to support these changes and provide the best way to prepare our chidren.  Point one: we need to continue to modify education so that children get not only a basic skill set but also some specialized education as they become closer to the working age. 

Second,and maybe most important to us as parents, is that without the traditional office where most of us learned our work ethics and personal responsibility, along with many social skills as we came of age and entered the workforce, these things will need to be taught at a younger age.  Whether it be at home, school, church or organizations, a concentrated effort and / or instruction on integrity, self confidence, social skills, personal responsibility and time managament are needed.  Value based personal awareness curriculum need to be as important as math and writing skills. Even more important is the need to integrate more specialized skill and creative arts into their lives. Otherwise a young adult entering the workforce will not only have a difficult time being able to integrate socially and responsibly from a home office but will not have a skill set that he can market as a contractor.

When I was younger I wanted my own business, but I didn’t know how to begin. Should I buy a franchise, join a multi-level marketing company, or start my own business?

 

I went to seminars, presentations, and sales pitches on selling everything from milk additives to fuel additives, from soap to jewellery.

 

A lot of the presentations were very high-pressured. They were designed to get you to buy, sign, and commit. It was all about selling the dream of a life of leisure; you could live like a king and enjoy life without hard work. You could be different from the average Joe—no longer serving the man but living the dream.

 

Having started and run three successful businesses myself and spoken to hundreds of small business owners I can look back over 35 years and say, “Yep, that was definitely a bunch of crap!”

 

These are the three great myths:

Leading should occur on the boundaries (eco-tones) in organization. Anthony Bryk and others suggested the role of School leadership was to work on the boundaries between School and community rather than micro-managing what went on in School. That almost sounds like John Dewey.

The challenge of engaging everybody at work is becoming more and more pressing.  This is a great article giving some good, practical ideas.  Ultimately, people looking for meaning in the work they do is nothing new (reference the works of Marx and the Industrial Revolution).  However, in the age of Information Technology and social media, the need is becoming more and more pressing.  Organisations cannot afford to ignore this phenomenon.

Setting strategy, defining objectives, building plans that are not aligned with the common belief and value systems is the definition of "disengaged leadership".  I agree that Leaders must create new mental models and inspire new value systems in order to drive change...but they can't do it in isolation.  The "do-tell" method doesn't apply here.  Leaders must engage and be engaged.  Leaders must recognize when it's best to follow...and be the First Follower.

      I like the engagement concept, but it has been twisted to suit a management perspective that is unhelpful. It is helpful to think of engagement as behavioral and emotional commitment; this results in loyalty to the company a willingness to stay and provide discretionary effort. A prerequisite to engagement is employee satisfaction and positive morale.

 

      The problem with engagement arose because it was presented in many instances as a tool for driving performance. Consultants and pollsters latched onto the idea that if you measured engagement you could then take various actions to change it with a variety of employee focused HR tools. All of sudden then HR had the means, it believed, to drive, employee performance-- and, of course, how could this not be valuable for business and management.

     In fact, engagement is useful because it begins to address the complexity of motivating organizational behavior. It helps us understand that both intrinsic and extrinsic factors should be considered, that the social conditions are important as well. Engagement points to the fact that a whole person approach is needed to fully enlist individual efforts on behalf of the organization.

 

      To obtain a truly engaged workforce, enterprises must start with choosing people who see it as more than simply a place to work;who see it as a valuable, useful means to a positive end for themselves and the broader community of which they are a part. Enterprises must come to the realization that supporting individuals in reaching their goals is the cost of getting individuals to support the organization's.

We are going to empower students as if we do their learning for them. Creating a positive and healthy learning environment with reciprocal relationships is the key.

Interesting article on strategy.  The three characteristics sound familiar...annual strategy review, SWOT, and vision statements...  These have been effective in developing a habit.  The suggestion here is that it shouldn't be a "once a year" effort, that SWOT analysis works best when focused on a strategy (not to find a strategy), and that a vision statement can be put together in short order and tweaked over time.
