BBC : Making the TV Application Layer Open Source

BBC : Making the TV Application Layer Open Source | How to Learn in 21st Century | Scoop.it

Building for Connected TV is complicated

The TV Application Layer originated from our ambition to run BBC iPlayer, News and Sport applications for Connected TVs on as many different devices as possible.

There are hundreds of different devices in the marketplace and they all use slightly different technology to achieve the same result.

Having figured out how to build an application on a specific device we want to use this knowledge to build additional applications for that device.

Our answer to this challenge is the TV Application Layer (TAL). By abstracting the differences between devices and creating a number of TV-specific graphical building blocks (like carousels, data grids and lists), we provide a platform upon which we can build our applications.

Via Nicolas Weil
Khitam A Al-Utaibi's insight:

Wonderful news!!!

As each new application faced a similar set of device specific challenges, such as media playback, animation or networking, we set about making the TV Application Layer a standalone product that could support our entire Connected TV product needs both now and in the future.

Khitam A Al-Utaibi's insight:

Teachers Embrace Digital Learning Strategies | MindShift

Teachers Embrace Digital Learning Strategies | MindShift | How to Learn in 21st Century | Scoop.it

Today is the second annual Digital Learning Day, designated to bring attention to the benefits of technology for learning. As part of the effort, PBS LearningMedia has released a survey showing that 74 percent of teachers say educational technology benefits their classroom in many ways, including the ability to reinforce and expand content, motivate students, and respond to a variety of learning styles. Given these numbers, and despite increasing access, it’s not surprising that 68 percent of teachers still want more access to technology in the classroom. That number goes up to 75 percent of teachers in low-income schools.

Via iEARN-USA
Khitam A Al-Utaibi's insight:

I appreciate teachers' initiating the change with their students in the classrooms. I hear them telling the official systems "WE'RE NOT WAITING FOR YOU TO CHANGE, WE ARE MOVING TOWARDS THE FUTURE WITH OUR STUDENTS".

If official education systems did not take qualitative steps towards better 21st century education, soon we will see them in chaos, living dark ages of ignorance, rigidness, and limited minds!

... If Seymour Papert is the Father of Educational Computing, then Cynthia Soiomon is the Mother of Educational Computing! Not only did Cynthia help create the first programming language for children, but she developed many of the pedagogical approaches and activities we still use to teach children to use computers. Forty five years later, Logo is still in use by millions of children around the world in the form of Scratch, MicroWorlds, Snap! and other dialects. The Twenty Things to Do with a Computer paper written by Solomon and Papert in 1970 or ’71 remains provocative today and lays the foundation for the maker movement sweeping the globe.

The workshop was a shift for educators from the familiar model which they are accustomed to in workshops they take in traditional style which depends on the coach as the focus of the workshop, to a more unfamiliar workshop strategy where the learners/trainees are the center in the whole process of this learning experience.

Portal:Novels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Giver is a novel written by Lois Lowry, April 16, 1993. It is set in a future society which is at first presented as a utopian society and gradually appears more and more dystopian; therefore, it could be considered anti-utopian. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the twelfth year of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan which has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of "Receiver of Memory," the person who stores all the memories of the time before Sameness, in case they are ever needed to aid in decisions that others lack the experience to make. As Jonas receives the memories from the previous receiver—the "Giver"—he discovers how shallow his community's life has become.

Khitam A Al-Utaibi's insight:

What if teaching becomes through novels instead of repetitive and quantitative curriculum?

I believe there will be space to broaden students imagination that leads to creativity!
