The Racism I Own

The Racism I Own | How privilege and diversity affect literature and media | Scoop.it
The racism I deal with is standard in its own way. It’s the racism of erasure. It’s the racism of assumptions. Don’t want me? Easy. Give me no representation. Take my story out of history books. Teach...

Dave the Potter and Stevie the Reader - The Horn Book

Dave the Potter and Stevie the Reader - The Horn Book | How privilege and diversity affect literature and media | Scoop.it
One of the things I love best about my work in children’s literature is how seamlessly it melds with my life as a mother. When I was elected to serve on the 2011 Caldecott committee, I wrote to family and friends, saying, “Thousands of picture books will come my way and I have just the …

Where Do Jews Fit Into the Movement for Increased Diversity in Children’s Books?

Where Do Jews Fit Into the Movement for Increased Diversity in Children’s Books? | How privilege and diversity affect literature and media | Scoop.it
Once upon a time, I heard a very serious novelist who writes for grownups comment that because she was struggling with writer’s block, she thought she’d knock out a quick children’s book. The snotty implication was that children’s books are simpler, shallower, less than. This is stupid. Chil...

How Walter Dean Myers Taught Me To Stop Writing White

How Walter Dean Myers Taught Me To Stop Writing White | How privilege and diversity affect literature and media | Scoop.it
My reading had taught me that I could render feminist characters long before I learned that there was a word to describe girls who bucked narrow gender roles. However, I also had internalized the belief that to be a legitimate author, my characters had to be white.

On Earned Equality

I’ve been thinking a lot about the inherent flaws of bootstrap equality,
especially within the publishing sphere.  If you aren’t familiar with the
term, bootstrap equality believes that those from marginalized spheres
should lift themselves up by hard work.  It’s complete and utter bullshit
for several reasons, mostly because it ignores the very real impact of
systemic oppression while at the same time implying that marginalized
groups have only themselves to blame for their problems.  Ide

“Overrepresentation”

“Overrepresentation” | How privilege and diversity affect literature and media | Scoop.it
I've come across several references to the "overrepresentation" of minority characters lately, including remarks about my own work. (In my case, it's been about LGBT+ characters.)

In theory, I assume overrepresentation means portraying a larger proportion of a particular type of character in your fiction than you'd expect to see from a sampling in the real ...
