A restored 1920s shingle-style cabin in Calistoga, California, by Amy A. Alper. The architect designed a new double-height living room addition to wrap the original exterior. Weathered shingles and period windows remain – when open, kitchen and living room are connected. New materials contrast with the old; reclaimed beams mediate between them, and visually echo the [...]

A Concept ‘Vertical City’ Skyscraper That Supports An Ecosystem

A Concept ‘Vertical City’ Skyscraper That Supports An Ecosystem | Architecture | Scoop.it

London-based design and academic research architecture practice SURE Architecture has designed and developed a concept skyscraper with multiple functions.
Called ‘Endless City’, the organic skyscraper is built around six steel tubes with an “endless” ramp that goes around the building from the ground floor, all the way up to the top.
It also features energy-saving and waste management elements that give the building another purpose—supporting an ecosystem. Plazas and communal spaces will occupy most parts of the skyscraper.
According to the architects, the shape of the skyscraper “attempts to maximize passive energy and reduce artificial lighting and ventilation”...

Grant Graves's curator insight, August 21, 2014 10:21 AM

Cities of the future will evolve as our ideals and control of the world change. Future cities as such would not have traffic jams , population woes, congestion, and many other issues that near all cities of today face. In this manner, cities will be designed for the ever changing needs of humans.  These cities will probably be build from the ground up instead of in an existing town or city. Overall, the future in these directions, will allow for a better advancement of the human race as a whole. -GG

Hydraulic Drive Revolutionizes the Performance of Wooden Shells

Hydraulic Drive Revolutionizes the Performance of Wooden Shells | Architecture | Scoop.it
Instead of designing for the extremely rare maximum load scenarios, why not build with minimum material input and have buildings adjust to varying dynamic loads like snow and wind? Researchers at the University of Stuttgart teamed up with Bosch Rexroth (an engineering firm specializing in drive and control technologies) to create an ultra-lightweight wooden shell which owes its adaptive structural behavior to a specifically designed hydraulic drive system. SmartShell is only four centimeters thick, covers a surface area of 100 square meters (1076 square feet), and features hydraulic drives positioned at its four support points. The system produces imperceptible movements and adjusts the shell’s geometry to compensate deformations and ma...

A House with an Origami-Like Roof

A House with an Origami-Like Roof | Architecture | Scoop.it
In Japan is a tent-like home with an unusual roof that looks as if it has been folded like origami. It keeps the family safe during storms and earthquakes.

In the Mie Prefecture of Japan situated in a old village surrounded by mountains is the ORIGAMI house, designed by TSC Architects. The design centers around a roof that appears folded like origami. The architect wanted the form of the house and the roof to feel like one body. The side with the sharp peak has numerous windows to look out to the mountains, while also keeping the interior filled with sunlight.

The design also allows for plenty of covered outdoor space while also controlling the amount of light and wind that enters the house.

A Sustainable Water Treatment Facility for Portland by Skylab Architecture

A Sustainable Water Treatment Facility for Portland by Skylab Architecture | Architecture | Scoop.it

Seven concrete fins provide a green roof that collects rainwater at this new engineering facility for a wastewater treatment plant in Portland, Oregon.

The new single-storey building was oriented along the path of the sun featuring seven folded cast-in-place concrete roof forms that channel storm water sustainably through the eco-roof. The storm water then drains along the berms into a visible storm water collection system leading back to the Columbia Slough.

As an intentional demonstration, the building and its immediate landscape employ signage and educational elements to celebrate the Columbia Slough ecosystem where the project is located as well as share information about the regional watershed. Inspired by the native landscape and its industrial past, the building is an elegant combination of landform, indigenous planting, formal geometry, and durable construction systems that support staff and the public interface.
