Why Time Seems To Speed Up As We Get Older

Why Time Seems To Speed Up As We Get Older | hotel weddings | Scoop.it

When you encounter the familiar, time seems to constrict and when you acquire new knowledge, it expands. Neuroscientist David Eagleman explains:

Time is this rubbery thing … It stretches out when you really turn your brain resources on, and when you say, “Oh, I got this, everything is as expected,” it shrinks up.

That relationship between time’s elasticity and whether your brain is processing new information gets at why time seems to turn up the tempo as we age. As the world starts to become more familiar, we learn less and sometimes even seek information and experiences that fit within what we already know. There’s less adventure, play, exploration, creativity, and wonder to invite and engage with newness.

One unnerving aspect of getting older is how life seems to start speeding up. Feeling that whoosh as time rushes past you can be disheartening as you wonder where the days, or months, or even years go.

Christmas carols and afternoon tea.

Christmas carols and afternoon tea. | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
There are just a few days left to enjoy Christmas themed afternoon tea in Wimbledon at one of the finest boutique hotels in the UK.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

Most people will say that Christmas is for the children but it doesn’t have to be all about them, we grownups love Christmas too! For me one of my favorites is hearing Christmas Carols sung by young voices but sadly, these days, it’s very unusual to hear Carol singers at my front door, so you can imagine how delighted I was to hear that I could enjoy an amazing afternoon tea and listen to a children’s choir singing carols around an huge Christmas tree at the same time.

One of the most beautiful boutique hotels in the UK invited its residents to a special Christmas celebration on Monday 1 December. Guests and locals, such as me and my friends, enjoyed watching and listening to the delightful choir from The Study School in Wimbledon. The 28 girls from Year 5 sung carols by the stunningly decorated Christmas tree in the lounge area, whilst we enjoyed the hotel’s complimentary warming mulled wine and delicious mince pies.

Will Harper, Resident Manager said “The Cannizaro House Christmas tree is an iconic feature every year, and this year we were delighted to play host to The Study School Year 5 pupil’s choir, to signal the beginning of the festive season” Just imagine going out shopping in Wimbledon and then having an amazing Christmas themed afternoon tea and carols …wonderful.

During December afternoon tea in Wimbledon is taking on a whole new festive twist themed with delights, including Snowmen Cupcakes and Christmas Tree Biscuits with a dusting of snow. In addition, there has been created a special Christmas Cocktail menu which will be available throughout December, serving Mince Pie Martini’s alongside the more traditional Mulled Wine. How good does that sound?

The best hotel with the best champagne.

The best hotel with the best champagne. | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
Everybody loves champagne but is it the genuine article? Here are some tips from one of the best boutique hotels in the UK.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

The Christmas Season is almost upon us and that of course means Christmas parties for both families and work colleagues. These occasions are a perfect excuse for a glass of champagne and I can’t think of a better place to sit with a glass in my hand than in one of the stunning public rooms at the most beautiful boutique hotels in the UK. A roaring log fire and a view over Wimbledon Common on a crisp winter’s day is just about as perfect as you can get,

Raising a glass of champagne is an age-old tradition, to celebrate during Christmas, at a birthday or engagement party or after a ceremony. You will nearly always find champagne at every major event in your life; it’s the drink to have when you’re in a joyous mood. Champagne is a very special beverage and one that has always implied a certain level of class and luxury.

We love champagne, we love to drink it, and we love the bubbles. Many people think champagne is just a fizzy type of wine, which is not strictly true. We have wine, we have sparkling wine and we have champagne. They are all made from grapes, but they really are different products.

Authentic champagne, that is the original and official champagne, is only produced in the Champagne region of France. That’s it, this is the only champagne in the world, and the name “champagne” is actually protected by the European Union, covered by the Treaty of Madrid 1981. The Treaty basically says that only champagne made in the Champagne region of France can be labeled as champagne.

A great Sunday lunch in Wimbledon.

A great Sunday lunch in Wimbledon. | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
Sunday lunch at one of the best boutique hotels in the UK can only mean this restaurant in Wimbledon village at Cannizaro House.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

I had friends from overseas to stay at the weekend and on Sunday we were at a bit of a loose end. It was a beautiful sunny warm (yes …it really was warm) autumn day so I suggested that we took a trip to Wimbledon. This question was greeted with cries of “It’s too early to start queuing for Centre Court tickets!” Very funny…I pointed out that I could take them to see the All England Tennis Cub from the outside but what I had in mind was a walk on Wimbledon Common, followed by lunch. Simply because the trees on the common are, because of our late autumn, the most stunning colours that I have ever seen in all the years that I have lived in Wimbledon.

So that was settled…off we went. In the car there was much discussion about where we would have lunch, but I had a cunning plan! We would park on the common, have our walk and then simply stroll into one of the finest boutique hotels in the UK and have our lunch in a stunning restaurant. We were seated at a huge window overlooking the stunning landscaped gardens, even at this time of year looking wonderful in the sunshine. The food was fantastic and we were not at all surprised to learn that the chef had just been awarded a prestigious third AA Rosette and an award for Best Fine Dining Restaurant plus one for Restaurant of the Year.

After lunch as we left this wonderful restaurant in Wimbledon village and walked back to the car, all the talk was about how beautiful Wimbledon was, and how it had felt as if we were deep in the countryside despite the fact that we were so close to the centre of London. So, all in all, a great Sunday was had by all.

Flower power at wedding venues in Surrey.

Flower power at wedding venues in Surrey. | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
There are many traditions and sayings related to weddings and we pay attention to them at our wedding venue in Surrey.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

There are so many sayings that are trotted out when a couple are getting married like “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue and a Silver Sixpence in her Shoe” Did you know that this rhyme originated in Victorian times? ‘Something Old’ signifies that the Couple’s friends will stay with them. In one version of the tradition the ‘Something Old’ was an old garter which was given to the bride by a happily married woman so that the new bride would also enjoy a happy marriage.
‘Something New’ looks to the future for health, happiness and success. We always hear at least part of this one when we are talking to bridal couples at our wedding venue in Surrey, so much so in fact that we have thought of making up a booklet with all of the traditional sayings to give to couples!

Wedding venue traditions.

Wedding venue traditions. | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
Here are a few of the many superstitions about weddings but at one of the best wedding venues in Surrey, tradition is more important.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

When it comes to Weddings, everyone’s superstitious. Even if you’re the kind of person who walks under ladders on point of principle, or laughs their socks off when friends touch wood, you can bet that, when your wedding day dawns, wild horses couldn’t stop you clutching something old and donning something blue. And that’s just for starters. We guarantee that you wouldn’t dream of seeing your fiancé on the morning of the wedding. And will you expect to be carried across the threshold? Of course you will!

But where do these old traditions come from?
Well, some can be traced back to Roman & Anglo Saxon times, some to Victorian rhymes and others to folklore that has been passed down through countless generations.
All of them are to do with bestowing good luck and fertility on the happy couple.

First steps to planning your wedding.

First steps to planning your wedding. | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
Looking for a wedding venue in Surrey? Then choose Cannizaro House, one of the best boutique hotels in the UK - here are some of their planning tips.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

Unless you’re very lucky, most couples have to set a wedding budget and stick to it to avoid problems later on. Keeping a tight rein on the spending can be hard as there are so many wonderful things out there for one of the most important days of your life. However, letting yourself get carried away may mean the start of married life in debt which is less than fun. If you are looking for a stunning wedding venue in Surrey we will be more than pleased to go through your budget with you, you never know, we might be able to spot some areas where you can save a little!

Wedding budgets can be helped by creativity. Creativity can go a long way in getting everything you want. Setting up a dedicated savings account can help, with a regular portion of your income set aside to go straight into it. One way to get everything you want may be to ask for the flowers or transport or any other element as your wedding present, something to consider if you already have most of the things that would be on a wedding list. The wedding budget should reflect what you want the most, it may just come down to prioritisation; if the way you arrive is more important to you than the cake, it makes sense to spend more money on a stylish car and choose a simple cake.

The best man and chief bridesmaid play major roles in helping you organise events beforehand and are especially important to you on the wedding day. Someone that you have partied with for ten years may be your closest confidant, but if they are unreliable, then it might be an idea to think of someone else. You both really need to be able to trust your best man and chief bridesmaid to deal with critical matters both in the lead up to and on the day.

Don’t be offended if the first person you ask declines your invitation, it’s a lot to ask of someone, especially if he or she dislikes being in the limelight. How much you involve other people in your wedding planning is up to you. The extent to which you involve family and loved ones in your wedding planning depends on your relationship with them. Generally people love to help, but if you are worried that they will interfere or take over, think hard before you ask them to do anything. On the other hand, giving particular tasks to those eager to join in can take the pressure off you, but be sure to give clear instructions, misunderstandings can cause all sorts of problems. If you don’t already have it, the lead up to the wedding will certainly hone your ability to delegate!

With your ceremony booked at one of the most beautiful luxury boutique hotels in the UK, you will find the rest of your tasks as wedding organizer will all fall into place.

Wimbledon is not just any common.

Wimbledon is not just any common. | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
Cannizaro House, one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in the UK, is situated on Wimbledon Common which has a most interesting history.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

Last week after a very hectic Christmas we decided to take ourselves off for a wonderful break at one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in the UK. The weather was amazing for the time of year, so we decided that we would take an early afternoon walk over Wimbledon Common, which surrounds the hotel.

I have to admit that the words “History” and “Wimbledon Common” for me don’t automatically go hand in hand so I thought that before we set out I would try and find out what I could about the background of the Common and especially the Windmill. I was truly astonished at what I found.

The first thing I came across was the fact that in 1864, the Lord of the Manor Earl Spencer who owned Wimbledon Manor attempted to get a private parliamentary bill to enclose the whole Common for the creation of a new park with a house and gardens. In a landmark decision for English Common Land and following an enquiry, permission was refused and a board of conservators was set up in 1871 to take ownership of the common and preserve it in its natural condition.

A windmill still stands near the centre of Wimbledon Common and in fact the unmarked parish boundary with Putney Common runs right past it. It was here that Robert Baden-Powell wrote parts of his “Scouting for Boys” published in 1908.

In the 19th century the windmill became the headquarters of the National Rifle Association and their annual gathering drew large crowds each year in July. These annual gatherings were attended by the élite of fashion, and always included a large number of ladies, who seemed to show a great interest in the target practice of the many male competitors! The members of the Association were competing for the honour of winning the Elcho Shield, the Queen’s or the Prince of Wales’s Prize, or the Annual Rifle Match between the Houses of Lords and Commons. Eventually the headquarters were moved to ranges at Bisley. Much more peaceful for the residents of Wimbledon I should imagine!

So afterwards it was back to the hotel for a sumptuous dinner in the best restaurant in Wimbledon Village, a perfect end to a perfect day.

How did afternoon tea begin?

How did afternoon tea begin? | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
That very English tradition of afternoon tea really started with a Portuguese princess but this lovely boutique hotel in the UK upholds the tradition.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

How did afternoon tea begin? Well, back in history the English primarily drank coffee and wine as their staple drink, tea was unknown in England till as late as 1662. In 1662 Charles II married Catherine of Braganza of Portugal, and did you know that it was she who started the custom of tea drinking in England? She served tea instead of wine, beer or spirits. Before you knew it tea had acquired the status of a royal drink and something that only the rich could afford.

Tea’s acceptance by British masses was quite slow. It wasn’t until the late 1700’s that tea’s popularity began to grow, as tea came from British colonies, it came to be viewed as a national drink, with all the British sentiments attached to it.
So when you take afternoon tea at one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in the UK in you have Catherine of Braganza to thank!

Tea immediately became a high class drink and therefore expensive, the British masses discovered that tea leaves could be brewed several times without any significant drop in the taste so they bought second hand, brewed leaves and brewed them longer to compensate, and so tea began to find a place in British everyday life.

Soon, tea began to be sold in London coffee houses. Tea was heavily advertised as a medicinal drink which helped maintain health and beauty. The coffee house owners charged heavily for a cup of tea, as much as 6-10 pounds per cup. The government soon imposed various taxes, regulations and restrictions on sale of tea, just to cash in on the growing tea trend. This of course led to tea being smuggled into England, it began to get so bad that eventually the taxes were removed and the smuggling stopped.

Tea, of course, continued to grow in popularity. Around 1800, there developed an “Afternoon tea” culture, wherein rich ladies invited their friends to meet at, for example, a restaurant in Wimbledon Village for a cup of tea in the afternoon. They also have served pastries and sandwiches with it. Afternoon tea was accompanied by refined conversation, gossip and of course a strict etiquette.

There is a hawk, now named Rufus, who has the job of scaring away any pigeons who are brave enough to try and land on any of the courts. Just in case you want to get in touch with him he has a Twitter account with 4,123 followers!

3. Strawberries are sweet:
Strawberries are synonymous with Wimbledon Fortnight; they are picked every morning at 5.00am and transported straight to the tennis club and you can’t get much fresher than that!

How To Master The Fine Art Of Small Talk

How To Master The Fine Art Of Small Talk | hotel weddings | Scoop.it

Small talk gets a bad reputation. To avoid this allegedly meaningless drivel, people skip networking events. Or, almost as bad, they attend, but talk to the three people they already know.

This is shortsighted, says Debra Fine, author of The Fine Art of Small Talk. “Small talk is the appetizer for any relationship,” she says, and people like to do business with those with whom they’ve established common ground. “A good networker is looking to foster relationships and build a community never knowing how that contact can help now or in the future.

Move beyond the weather to make small talk less painful and more productive. Here are five things that great conversationalists know.

Mary Flatt's curator insight, May 20, 2014 3:08 PM

One suggestion in focusing your networking efforts is to think about how you might be useful to this individual instead of how they might provide you with value.  Safe ice breakers include comments about the venue,  the organization and what other events the person may have attended.

When you set the expectations lower,  you are not looking for every contact you make to provide information on a job opening or a company with potential.

The excitement of getting engaged can blind you to the need for careful wedding planning. At our wedding venue in Surrey we can help you plan carefully.
CannizaroHouse's insight:

e all know that becoming engaged to the love of your life is exciting! So it’s no surprise that as a new soon-to-be bride you will start planning your wedding the second that ring is placed on your finger. But take a moment, take a breath, and enjoy… because you really don’t want to rush your wedding decisions. Rushing decisions for an event of this magnitude can end up costing you, both financially and emotionally! At our wedding venue in Surrey we’re here to help. The sheer excitement of becoming engaged can catapult you into a frenzy of planning before you know it; but take a deep breath and simply enjoy the fact that the love of your life has chosen to spend the rest of his life married to you, how wonderful is that?

From our many years of experience we have found that there are one or two common wedding planning mistakes that engaged couples make, for instance:

1. You can do everything yourself.

You want to be in charge and do everything yourself for your wedding. You have booked your wedding venue at one of the most beautiful boutique hotels in the UK. You assume that since you started planning a year in advance, you will have plenty of time to do the bouquets, invitations and table centerpieces. Whilst your intentions are good, realistically, those months will fly by.

How to find the perfect conference facilities. - Cannizaro House

How to find the perfect conference facilities. - Cannizaro House | hotel weddings | Scoop.it
How to find the perfect conference facilities. If you are planning a conference you will have already realised that you have hundreds of things to think about and plan. One of these is which hotel with conference facilities will you be using? The first thing to take into consideration is where everyone will be coming …
CannizaroHouse's insight:

You will then need to decide on an area to consider for the meeting. You can either take a large area which is fairly central to most people or you can choose an area which is adjacent to where the majority of the guests will be coming from. By doing this you will make it easier for your delegates in that most people prefer not to have to travel too far, good road and rail links to the venue are a must.

Conference facilities in London abound, but to discover one that is both close to the city and yet also surrounded by beautiful countryside is a real find; that is where our hotel, one of the finest boutique hotels in the UK comes in. It is not difficult to settle on a perfect conference facility like ours to hold your event. You will have, by now, planned things properly and been logical. You will have thought about what you want and you will have used that as a guide line for setting up the event.

All you now have to do is contact us to make sure that we can accommodate your conference on your chosen date and make an appointment to view our state of the art conference facilities, discuss menus and accommodation should you need it. We promise you won’t be disappointed!
