Three important points to remember from this article:

Social Media is the New Yellow Pages

Your Presence is Vital to Exist
Your Online Reputation Must Be Monitored

Mom wasn't kidding.  In high school we were warned to make sure our reputation was something of which Mom and Dad could be proud.  One mistake and our whole reputation could be ruined.  Then again, one lie and our reputation could be ruined as well.  We had to walk to halls knowing the whispers and gossip was about us.  And we waited, hoped, and perhaps prayed that time would go by quickly enough for someone else to be the topic of conversation so that people would forget what we may or may not have done.

Fast forward to 2013.  One bad Yelp review, one mere negative comment that goes unaddressed can affect you and your business.  Our online reputations are the biggest selling points we have.  Your clients, customers, and future consumers look to the web, your facebook page, your linked in account, your website to check you out.  Having an online presence gives you credability; it sets you apart from your competition.  It allows you to boast, brag and talk about your goods and services in a free environment that allows others to find you!

Pay attention to your brand as you would your reputation in high school.
