The Myth of the Plus-Sized Model

The Myth of the Plus-Sized Model | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it

This post discusses why the term 'plus-sized model' is misleading.

The average height for a female model is between 5’8 and 5’11.  The average weight is around 120 pounds.  The issue with this?  The average height for a woman is somewhere around 5’4, whilst doctors consider 135 pounds, give or take, to be a healthy weight for a woman who stands around 5’4.  For a woman who stands 5’11, a healthy weight would be around 160 pounds, 40 pounds heavier than the typical runway model.  The problems this creates are obvious.  Not only do people develop unrealistic expectations of the body, but they also develop a skewed perspective.  Now there are women who are healthy at 5’11 and 120 pounds, just as there are women who are healthy at 5’2 and 160 pounds.  Every body is different.  The problem though is the terminology being employed to describe women.

Throughout the 1940’s and through to the 1960’s, it was not uncommon to see curvaceous women modelling clothes.  Marilyn Monroe was considered perhaps the greatest sex symbol of her era.  Her figure was far more realistic than that of a typical runway model.  At 5’5 and ranging anywhere from 120-140 pounds, Monroe would have struggled to get access to a runway today, just as we see models like Kate Upton get rejected by high-fashion magazines because of her curvaceous figure.  The pin-up models of the post-WWII era shared similar features, but this too was a problem.  It also created unrealistic expectations.  These women were are very busty and wide hipped.  Many women, who were thinner or more petite, had no way of achieving the standard of beauty embraced in the era.  They could not make their breasts bigger or their hips wider and so found themselves outside of the scope of what was projected as beautiful.

Swanky Pins's insight:

What is thought to be a beautiful woman changes from decade to decade and country to country so sometime, somewhere every one of us will be considered gorgeous.

Why you should be buying yourself lingerie

Many women give off the impression that they will only buy lingerie if they have someone to see it. This is really sad because lingerie should be for you. So I am going to give you the reasons you need to buy yourself lingerie: Whenever you have previously put lingerie on for someone else, you…
Swanky Pins's insight:
Totally agree here.  Women SHOULD buy for themselves not for someone else.  A great piece of lingerie will be a confidence boost and make you look and feel fantastic even if no-one is around to see it :)

Really like this cute collection from the Japanese Flufeel brand -  although very different from my usual style taste.  However, on checking the Felissimo website it states 'Colour/design will be decided by Felissimo. After you have collected all designs and colors, you are not able to order again' .  Not exactly sure what this means but I think it may put many off ordering!

Women Buy More Lingerie When It's Modeled On Bodies Resembling Their Own (Duh)

Women Buy More Lingerie When It's Modeled On Bodies Resembling Their Own (Duh) | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it
Attention shoppers: The results are in and it turns out that when women browse bras and underwear online, they’re more likely to buy items modeled by curvy brunettes than thinner-bodied blondes, according to data from New York-based lingerie site AdoreMe.com. The company culled this data from
Swanky Pins's insight:

So using plus sized models sells more lingerie - it's official.  Hopefully some of the major players will cotton on to the fact that most of us don't want to see photoshop'd size 6's, we want 'average' sized women that we can identify with (no matter what their hair colour :)

Vintage Lingerie Through the 20th Century

Vintage Lingerie Through the 20th Century | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it
Nowadays, women have more choices than ever when it comes to lingerie. From comfort to style to sex appeal, girls have it all. But as shown by this infographic, kindly provided to us by the team at Sheer Luxury Lingerie, styles were more constricting in the early 20th century ranging from the 1900s, 1920s and all ...
Swanky Pins's insight:

This type of vintage lingerie may well be a far cry from what we buy today, with tight girdles and rigidly boned corsets being constrictive and uncomfortable to wear, but the glamorous styles recreated in modern fabrics are as hugely popular now as they were back in the day.

Meet The Lingerie Line That Celebrates Women of Every Shape

Meet The Lingerie Line That Celebrates Women of Every Shape | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it

Between the first plus size model appearing in Sports Illustrated’s swimsuit issue and Vogue’s plus-size lingerie editorial, it’s been a progressive last few months for the representation of all body sizes image in media.

Swanky Pins's insight:

The over crowded mainstream lingerie market still caters mainly for unrealistic body types - standard sizes which are shown to us in Photoshop'd magazine spreads across the world. However, some brands are rebelling against this and bringing the lingerie business completely up to date with new styles, sizing and photo shoots using 'real' women.

New Zealands' Lonely Lingerie is one such brand. Their website shop itself doesn't look very inspiring (in my opinion), although I do love some of the styles despite the rather high price tags ($65-$70 NZD - £34 odd for a pair of knickers), but if you are not a 'standard' size or shape and want to get your lingerie fitting just right, it is worth paying the extra £'s.

The truth about pantyhose - Global Times | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it
Today, my day was completely ruined by a pair of pantyhose.
Swanky Pins's insight:

A satirical look at pantyhose.  Many of the points made are funny but true, although many of these problems are down to ill-fitting sizes and cheap quality products.  "Women spend tons on hair, makeup, nails, their wardrobe, and then are astounded when a 2 dollar pair of pantyhose lets them down."

Where is the Lingerie for Trans Women? | The Lingerie Addict | Lingerie For Who You Are

Where is the Lingerie for Trans Women? | The Lingerie Addict | Lingerie For Who You Are | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it
There's something odd about all the attention that the lingerie world gives to crossdressing men, and how little it gives to trans women.
Swanky Pins's insight:
To be honest, I didn't realise until I read this that specialised lingerie for trans women doesn't really exist. It seems rather remiss of the industry to find that just one lingerie designer (Chrysalis Lingerie) has introduced a small range of bras and panties for Women of the Trans-gender Community.  Would be nice to raise some awareness on this subject.

Apparently men's pants are more comfortable to wear than ladies knickers, so if you are not too concerned with your underwear lacking sex appeal, why not?

There was more pressure in the glamour years of the 40's and 50's to put on weight than there is now for us to lose weight.  In those days, skinny was perceived as unattractive and ads told us that men found us so much more attractive once we piled on the pounds.

Swanky Pins's insight:
Quirky, a little bit cool - but are they really practical?  Yes they look great whilst in place, but what about when they move (as they are bound to at some point during the day) and you have blobs of colour making their way off the end of your sandal?  I'm all for even toning legs in summer with a subtle pair of nudes, but the jury's out on these stockings with nail polish.  I sort of love them, but probably wouldn't wear them.

Vintage bra ads

Vintage bra ads | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it
A quick peek at styles of advertisements for brassieres over the past century
Swanky Pins's insight:

17 Vintage bra ads ranging from the 'bodice' styles of the early 1900's to the popular 'perma-lift' bullet bras of the 50's and circular spoke stitched bras of the 60's.  Some of the ads are quite comical - "I dreamed I raced with the wind in my Maidenform bra" or "I dreamed I went to work in my Maidenform bra".   How many women actually 'dream' of wearing their bra to work?  Once bra hit the seventies & eighties, the glamour of the 40's and 50's styles just seems to disappear and our bras become boring and practical - in my opinion.

‘You Are Not Just A Body': The Feminist Mantra of Neon Moon – Lingerie Talk | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it

Top 5 Pantyhose Tips (MTF Transgender / Crossdressing Tips) - YouTube

Tips for Transgender or Cross-Dressers on Wearing Tights / Pantyhose

Swanky Pins's insight:

I have to disagree with sticking to nude or jet black sheers in the lowest denier you can find, personally I would go with whatever takes your fancy and looks good. Choosing the best quality tights / pantyhose makes sense, as does streamlining your look with matching shoes, but what is wrong with a bolder or patterned style?

The video also recommends not wearing open toed shoes but many of today's pantyhose / tights have very sheer invisibly reinforced toes specifically for wearing with sandals or open toe footwear so I cannot see a problem with this.

Get Ready to Rethink What You Expect a Lingerie Model to Look Like

Get Ready to Rethink What You Expect a Lingerie Model to Look Like | Hosiery & Lingerie | Scoop.it
In case you missed it, Lingerie Fashion Week just concluded in New York City. While the runways were chockablock with pretty, sexy underpinnings, I was thrilled to see the array of body types of the models: women of all shapes and sizes paraded the runway. And you know what? They looked beautiful in their remarkably regular-looking bods (so not the willowy, long, and lean physiques that typically stalk down the runway). "From the beginning we envisioned it as a platform to embrace and celebrate a wide range of intimate apparel brands and, therefore, body types, from petite to full bust to full figure to maternity," Lauren Rich, founder and organizer of the official event explained to me. "Lingerie is not one-size-fits-all, and neither are the women who wear it, whether on or off the runway." We just talked about the plus-size runway show staged during London Fashion Week, and you guys loved it. It felt refreshing and realistic to see women closer to the average national size up there strutting it and looking gorgeous. Please know that I'm not saying these women are all plus-size. Rather, they all just feel authentic and realistic to me. I'm hoping it's the start
Swanky Pins's insight:

In contrast to Victoria's Secrets 'perfect body' campaign in which all models are sizes 6/8, women of all shapes and sizes took part in this lingerie show - how refreshing to see 'normal' sized women on the runway.

Swanky Pins's insight:

The 'perfect body' changes with the times - Marylin Monroe was the perfect body of the 50's and she was a good few sizes larger than the models here.  Many women would be up in arms about this campaign and the comments here make better reading than the article - one says "If you are fat and you don't like it, exercise and make better food choices."  This is true for many of us who could eat and drink less sugar and go to the gym but not every woman has a 'solvable' weight problem.
