This is my gift for horse people all over the world.  I realize you are looking for proven techniques to train both your horse and your students.  Now you do!  The Horse and Rider Awareness videos are homemade and follow the training progress of several horses and riders over the years.  They are live films taken in the actual training session so you can see what happens to real horses and riders.  There is no editing and I am filming as I coaching.  These techniques have been tested on 1000's of horses and riders and have also been used in instructor training and certification programs.

A cowboy without a horse is, well. . . simply a bow-legged pedestrian carrying a saddle. Thank goodness that Roy Rogers had Trigger! But don’t think for one minute that Trigger was just a large hooved movie prop or just some Western extra.
Randi Thompson's insight:

We all know who really made Roy Rogers a star, it was his horse, Trigger!  Check out this amazing blog filled with great photos and information about him.

How to Teach a New Rider the Basics of Riding

How to Teach a New Rider the Basics of Riding | Horse and Rider Awareness | Scoop.it

We all love sharing the joy of horses with those who are around us.  In this article, we will talk about how to keep a new rider, or a guest, safe and having fun while they learn how to control your horse.
The horse you choose is very important and needs to be safe in any situation.  A new rider will not be able to control it like you and needs to have a horse that will allow them to make a lot of mistakes. We call this horse an “Equine Saint”   Horses to avoid would be those that are quick movers, horses that tend to be nervous, spooky or very sensitive to a riders cues, or horses that are new to training.

Randi Thompson's insight:

Showing a new rider or guest how to safely ride a horse makes the entire experience much more fun.  It's easy to do!  Check out this article to see how.

"Have you always wanted to know more about half halts? How they can make a difference for your horse?"

This is Susan Faulkner Evans on her new horse, Darrien. It is our 3rd session together. We have taken him out of his usual double bridle and are using a snaffle. As a result he will test Susan more by throwing his nose up and she has the opportunity to practice what she needs to do to keep it in the right position while keeping him thick in the base of his neck. This is a result of Susan asking Darrien to connect with her seat. To do this, she asks him to step up into her rein connect so that he steps up more with his hind feet and lifts his back. We focus on this with half pass, shoulder in, walk pirouettes and the stretchy walk.

Trot. Leg yield into 10 meter circle. #2 Connecting Susan and Darrien

This is Susan Faulkner Evans on her new horse (about two weeks) Darrien. Our goal is to have Darrien move straighter in curves and straight lines by asking Susan to feel when he is picking up her outside seatbone. We use the 1st level exercise of a leg yield into a 10 meter circle and back to a leg yield or circle to see if Darrien is really staying connected and under Susan's seat.

In this session Susan Faulkner Evans is riding her new horse, Darrien (about two weeks).  As we prepare for the canter we start at the walk with pirouettes (somewhat like a turn on the haunches) shoulder in and half pass so that Susan can feel if Darrien is connected in every step.  Next we continue the same exercises at the trot.  We are using a 10 meter circle. or the first steps of it into a half pass so that Susan can feel if Darrien is really balanced between her legs and reins.

What Laws Exist Involving Safety Helmets for Horseback Riding?

What Laws Exist Involving Safety Helmets for Horseback Riding? | Horse and Rider Awareness | Scoop.it
Legal Matters :: What Laws Exist Involving Safety Helmets - Just another Equine Chronicle weblog
Randi Thompson's insight:

For me, a rider's safety always come first.  All of my riders, and myself, always wear a helmet .  Yet, so far, only a few states require them for under age riders.  The good news is that most of the horse organizations are now requiring protective helmets (ATSM).  One step at a time..

I spend a lot of time managing all my social media accounts and business pages.  This past week a friend suggested I try Buffer.  At first I was resistant, than took the time to go check out the FREE version.  I experimented with it. What did I find?  It let's me post on Facebook, Twitter and Linked in.  I can schedule the posts and edit them so that each post is different that I share on each network.  All I need to do is click on the Buffer icon that was added to my toolbar and it works like magic.  Best of all, no one knows I am using an automatic poster.  It does not say where the posts are coming from!  Of course, I am very careful to respond to any one who comments on the posts that I share from there, which is easy as Buffer also has an analytic page that shows all the posts I have shared and how many people have responded to them!   If you are getting overwealmed with all the posts you are sharing I would highly recommend that you check into this.  Just go to http://bufferapp.com/r/7ca5c8

Half halts. The basics. New series with Susan and Darrien

Half halts are used to reconnect a horse in rider both mentally and physically. This is my third session we Susan Faulkner Evans and her new horse Darrien. We are focusing on making sure that the half halts are in place that are needed to keep Darrien connected mentally and in balance physically. When the half halt is correct Susan feels him pick up his back, especially at the walk. Next, she let's him flow on a lighter rein until he drops his back again. At first, she is half halting every 3 steps. As this session continues you will see that they both get more connected.
