"Ride For Hope" Fundraiser Will Have Equestrian Stars Hoping to "Rein Supreme" -- Or Maybe Just Hang On!

"Ride For Hope" Fundraiser Will Have Equestrian Stars Hoping to "Rein Supreme" -- Or Maybe Just Hang On! | Horse and Rider Awareness | Scoop.it

The Equestrian Aid Foundation is putting the "fun" in "fundraiser" by hosting the upcoming "Who Reins Supreme" event in West Palm Beach, Florida on February 1.

The Friday evening fundraising event pairs a clever moniker--"Who Reins Supreme?"--with a unique competition between teams of world-class equestrians from dressage, show jumping, hunter and polo.

Their challenge for the evening, in the name of fun and fundraising, will be to tackle a custom reining test of speedy spins and sliding stops--on a real reining horse.

The team with the highest scores wins bragging rights to "Who Reins Supreme?" across multiple equestrian disciplines. The event also features special guest Tom McCutcheon, World Equestrian Games' reining double gold medalist who will judge the event with wife Mandy.

The stars are lining up to participate, too--I just saw Chris Hickey's name on the list of elite equestrians who'll try to hang onto a spinning reiner.

The Equestrian Aid Foundation is a national non-profit that provides financial assistance for those in the horse community suffering from catastrophic illness or injury throughout their time of need.

EAF grant recipients receive funding for medical, healthcare, rehabilitation and essential expenses, such as food and housing.

The only problem with the event is that you can't attend--because it is already sold out.

You can, however, still make a donation: go to http://equestrianaidfoundation.org

You can also "like" them on Facebook at

Follow them on Twitter at:

How ScoopIt works: Click on the headline or image to go to the Equestrian Aid Foundation's Facebook page and see which stars are (literally) on board!

This is my gift for horse people all over the world.  I realize you are looking for proven techniques to train both your horse and your students.  Now you do!  The Horse and Rider Awareness videos are homemade and follow the training progress of several horses and riders over the years.  They are live films taken in the actual training session so you can see what happens to real horses and riders.  There is no editing and I am filming as I coaching.  These techniques have been tested on 1000's of horses and riders and have also been used in instructor training and certification programs.

Most riders are not aware that they are not in balance on curves. Randi Thompson's insight:

We start this session by showing Camille how to position Polo so that she can ride him on a curve with her outside leg and rein. As part of this process I also show her how to keep her inside seatbone where it needs to be for the horse to stay connected on that outside rein and leg. This is a missing link for so many riders who do not realize that they need to be anchored down their inside leg with their inside seatbone over it. Easier said than done! Of course, once a rider feels it, they know why it is important. Watch as I show Camille Beatty what she can do to isolate that feeling. Next, I ask Camille to her weight on her inside seat bone and down into the inside leg. This became the focus for this series.

What do you see happening?

Randi Thompson's insight:

"What are you doing with your riding position when you ask your horse to back?"

We start this session by showing Trudy how to feel what her riding position is doing when she is riding a half halt.  That way she will have a better understanding of how this feeling applies to how she is backing Ani.   Once Trudy has isolated that feeling, we add it to how she is asking Ani to halt, back up and than move forward again.  What is interesting is that you will see Ani's balance and responses improve as Trudy focuses on old habits she needs to change. Watch as Trudy starts exploring the possibilities of what she can do with her riding position.

What did you see changing in how Ani was backing up?  Could you see the difference in how Trudy is now using her riding position?

"Would You Like to See A Horse and Rider Go Into Self Carriage at the Canter fro the First Time?"

This was an exciting day for Camille, in fact for all of us. For the first time, she felt how to keep Polo in front of her legs and the beginnings of self carriage. This was also new for Polo. Basically she kept an even feel on both reins and used her legs to ask Polo to step up into the connection. Like most riders and horses who first learn this, they will get it for a few strides and lose it. Now that they have felt it, they will get more consistent with keeping it for longer periods of time.

Randi Thompson's insight:

Can you see when they connect and Polo goes into self carriage?

Randi Thompson's insight:

Did you know that by keeping your hands in the right place, that your riding position will be more balanced?

I show people where to keep their hands with what is called "the Money Box"  It is the width of their horses shoulders and about 8 inches in height.  How does it work?  The riders imagine that invisible box and try to keep their hands in it.  If their hands go outside of it...  they have to pay me $50.  :)   For the younger riders.  Instead of a $$$ box, they get a "chore box" when their hands come out of the box they have to do an extra chore at home.  This also works with a  western saddle.  Some people like their hands above the saddle horn, others in front of it.  I like my hands in front of the saddle horn for safety reasons.  What about you?

Randi Thompson's insight:

A horse that is moving freely at the walk will look like it is "nodding" it's neck. This starts at the poll and goes down to where the riders hands are. Now you can see what it looks like. In this session Susan focuses on Darrien's walks. First Darrien has to stay in front of Susan's leg aids. Than Susan will watch to see if he is nodding his neck, instead of bracing it. This is when Darrien is moving through his whole body and using his back.

Randi Thompson's insight:

In this session you will see how we are using the backing to connect Susan and Darrien (her new horse). To do this, she is focusing on keeping his shoulders and head up as he backs. Darrien is still rooting a little with the reins at times (he came to us with this issue) but is much better than he was a few months ago. In part #2 we continue with the canter (from the correct lead) to the halt, to backing up and back up into the correct lead canter.

What did you learn from watching Susan and Darrien that you can use while backing your horse?
