The Horse-Owning Gardener’s Dilemma: Is Compost from the Manure Pile Safe for Vegetables?

The Horse-Owning Gardener’s Dilemma: Is Compost from the Manure Pile Safe for Vegetables? | Horse Industry News | Scoop.it

Via Susie Blackmon
Mary Horsemoms's insight:

Fran wrote a great article on using horse poop as fertilizer.

It's natural and it's recyclable but it can also be very unhealthy, even dangerous if you don't wash and clean any vegetables or fruits that are being grown in this fertilizer.

Certianly not as dangerous as Monsantos GMO... But still important to pay close attention.

Frans article goes into quite some detail on a test they did. Facsinating and surprising.

So if you're like me and add this to your garden, you really need to have a look at her article.

All manure can be composted....

All manure from all sources has the potential to be dangerous

Use the right technique (hot composting, >40C) and tools (eg a HOTBIN) and it will be fine

After The Finish Line: Horse Industry Confronts Issues Facing Its Retired Racers

After The Finish Line: Horse Industry Confronts Issues Facing Its Retired Racers | Horse Industry News | Scoop.it
This is the third in a series of posts, corresponding with horse racing’s Triple Crown, examining safety issues facing the sport. Read part one and part two. His name was Ferdinand.
Mary Horsemoms's insight:

Most owners aren’t selling their retired horses for slaughter intentionally. But at auctions across the country, “kill buyers” line up to buy cheap stallions and mares, and their only aim is to turn a profit by loading their new purchases into vans and shipping them to foreign slaughterhouses. Soon, they won’t even have to send the horses to other countries...

How Much Weight Can Horses Comfortably Carry?

How Much Weight Can Horses Comfortably Carry? | Horse Industry News | Scoop.it
Horses topped out at 29% of their body weight in a study that evaluated gait changes when loaded.

Via Deborah Spector
Mary Horsemoms's insight:

Interesting take on how an unballanced rider can add what feels like substantial weight to a horse.

Makes perfect sense tho' when you consider the extra effort and stress the horse needs to go through to componsate for the un-evenness.

Important for all theraputic riding stables and events to pay special attention to this situation.

Putting a horse at risk based on this situation only puts the rider at even a worse risk.

Worse still... the rider is disabled and the result of a fall or an accident substantially increases the danger to that special needs rider.

Have a look at this article, it will change how you guage weight and rider for a particlar horse.

Deborah Spector's curator insight, May 21, 2013 5:13 PM

Very interesting article. The horses in this study were small - 14.1 hands. The study was originally done to look at the effects of riders in therapeutic riding, since they are often unbalanced, making their weight seem heavier.
