Favorite article of 2012: Equestrianism Is the Best Sport | The Economist

Favorite article of 2012: Equestrianism Is the Best Sport | The Economist | Horse Fencing & Horse Stalls | Scoop.it

"It starts with a ballet on horseback: rider and horse as one, performing a dressage test of such elegance, beauty and precision as to put ice dancers to shame. It moves on to the cross-country phase in which the team—for horse and rider are a team in themselves, within the national team they may represent—hurtles over sturdy fences, made of timber, brush or stone, into water and over ditches.

"It requires a special combination of strength, athleticism, bravery and trust—horse in rider, rider in horse—to leap over a solid four-foot wall with a blind drop on the landing side.

"And it culminates in show-jumping. In a crowd-filled stadium, the pair negotiate a course of coloured jumps; one tiny mistake, a mis-flick of a hoof on a pole four foot high, and the efforts of the previous days are undone.»

@FranJurga writes: Looking back on 2012, this article stood out as a beautifully-written raison-d'etre for the presence of all those horses in London's Greenwich Park.

At the same time, it is both a call to arms and a challenge for all of us who care about horse sports to realize that our future lies not so much in what we know is true, but in how our sport, our horses and the way we treat them is perceived by those outside the sport.

How technology is going to make the 2020 Olympics better, safer, and more exciting -- Popular Science

How technology is going to make the 2020 Olympics better, safer, and more exciting -- Popular Science | Horse Fencing & Horse Stalls | Scoop.it

About 100 riders are injured in eventing falls every year, and when a multimillion-dollar horse goes down, even a minor injury like a twisted ankle can end its career.

Computerized bases on the ground could project holographic obstacles, such as four-foot fences and 15-foot-wide pools, in place of dangerous physical objects.

Line-of-sight infrared beams could monitor the edges of the obstacles; if the horse breaks the beam, the system would instantly alert the judges—and the crowd—to the fault.

@FranJurga writes: In this article, Popular Science makes what seems like some far-out predictions for the technology that could be in place by the time the 2020 Olympics rolls around. Included is this little section on possible changes to jumping by having horses jump holographs projected on the arena rather than the real thing.

But wouldn't horses be just as likely to injure themselves? They're still jumping...

Interesting!

Ann Dixon's curator insight, March 17, 2014 7:54 AM

Using water therapy is an incredibly effective way to condition horses before training, to help to heal injuries, to use as a tool to "let down" fit horses at the end of a season, and so many more uses. Always use qualified practitioners to rehab your horse as there can be health issues to watch out for.

For those of us in the mid-Atlantic states hit by the St Patrick's Day snow storm, chances are the melt-off and subsequent mud means more bad footing until temperatures rise, the sun returns. and everything dries out. If you can not ride outdoors, ride "in your head" by watching online training sessions. Here is a terrific Lucinda Green Clinic clip.

A "thank you" to Tom Gawler for the link. Tom was British Horse Society "Coach of the Year" in both 2010 and 2013. Tom was also groom for 2012 Olympic gold medal winning British Dressage rider, Laura Tomlinson (née Bechtolsheimer). For three years Tom taught and rode at the world renowned Talland School of Equitation. Tom currently works as Senior Instructor, BHSII + SE at Shardeloes Farm Equestrian Centre in Amersham, UK. Contact Tom Gawler for training via reception@shardeloesfarm.com.

Look for more training clips like this one, and set up a list to watch, whilst you exercise indoors. Because you aren't going to just sit there on the couch, and pass the time devouring junk food whilst you wait for the mud to dry, are you? I didn't think so. And, when the mud does dry out, your horse will thank you, too!
