"Lexington, I've fallen hard for you. You've won me over and opened my eyes to the true beauty of small town hospitality and big city dreams. Because you give both..."

@franjurga writes: Megan Smith is not one of us; she is not from the horse world. But who among us would argue with her panegyric for the town that most of us think of as our second home?

She even mentions the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games as a turning point in Lexington culture; now that's intriguing!

Values every horse owner should have

Values every horse owner should have | Horse Care | Scoop.it
If you're a horse lover, you'll agree. If you're not, you just won't understand. For us, it's all about the horse. I't how they make us feel, how we care for them.
Mary Horsemoms's insight:

It’s all about your horses well being…  and yours too.

It’s one thing to try to take the best care of your horse and it’s another to know for certain that you’re doing the right thing.

It can be complicated and … confusing but it’s understandable and we are here to help.

When you think about it… we are all part of a herd… horses and people and we have a responsibility.

Once you look at it that way it’s much easier to look after your self, your horse and other people in a very different way. That’s how we think.

Mary Horsemoms's insight:

It's (essentially, a permanent nerve block) dangerous and potentially deadly. If the horse can't feel the pain it will destroy that part of it's body. That's why we have pain to warn us. Banning it was the right thing to do.

Mary Horsemoms's insight:

Considerable time and money can be invested in analyzing bloodlines and selecting stallions for broodmares.

To reach genetic potential a similar investment of thought and care is necessary after pregnancy is confirmed.

Mineral intake during pregnancy is very important for both mare and foal
.

Mares’ milk is very low in:

coppermanganesezincseleniumiodineand iron

For the first 3 months after birth the foal relies on its own reserves which it builds up during the last 3 months of pregnancy.

If the pregnant mare does not receive adequate trace minerals in the last 3 months of pregnancy...

It is not possible to make up for this by supplements either the mare or the foal after birth.

Poor nutrition has been called
“the hidden handicapper”

The incidence of bone and joint lesions is the same – whether or not the mares and foals are supplemented after birth.
