Good karma? ‘Wonder pug’ sniffs out breast cancer in animal rescuer

Good karma? ‘Wonder pug’ sniffs out breast cancer in animal rescuer | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it

"A woman who works in the animal rescue business appears to have earned some good karma for her good deeds. The lady’s pug, which she rescued from a breeding facility, helped her get diagnosed early with breast cancer, possibly saving her life, the New York Daily News reported April 16.

Marian Cooper, 57, says that her six-year old portly pug, Flo, repeatedly nudged and sniffed at her right breast. Cooper initially thought the rescued pooch was just being a nuisance."

This is a feel good story. I think it's great that her dog sniffed out her breast cancer. Dog's have incredible senses of smell and if they trained more dogs to detect cancer it would be worthwhile for all cancers.

Can Technology Create Happiness?

Can Technology Create Happiness? | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it
For decades, GDP has been the primary measure of the success of a society. Is it any wonder than we’re ever more prosperous but no more happy?
Cathryn Wellner's insight:

Greg Satell writes:

"What most surprised me when I arrived in the former Eastern Bloc was that many people were happy even under the failed Communist system. Not because they liked the system or that they would like to return to it, but because they had many of the things required for happiness, such as good friends, strong families and community ties.

"So while happiness is certainly a worthy personal goal, it could be an unrealistic one for societies. Maybe what we really should be shooting for is dignity, which Immanuel Kant defined as the right for people to be treated as ends in themselves, rather than as means to an end."

The Simple Act of Validation & Acknowledgement

The Simple Act of Validation & Acknowledgement | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it

When you can spare five minutes, please use it to watch this touching video.  It shows interaction between Naomi Feil, who developed what she has termed Validation Therapy for older people with cognitive impairments and dementia.

In this video she is administering Validation Therapy to Gladys Wilson, an elderly Alzheimer's patient who is non-communicative.  The basic principle of the therapy is the concept of validation or the reciprocated communication of respect which communicates that the other's opinions are acknowledged, respected, heard, and (regardless whether or not the listener actually agrees with the content), they are being treated with genuine respect as a legitimate expression of their feelings, rather than marginalized or dismissed.
