Conversations.org: Demetrio Braceros, by Richard Whittaker

Conversations.org: Demetrio Braceros, by Richard Whittaker | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it

...And then, walking into the park and getting a better look, I was shocked to see so many pieces of art. It was hard to believe. This was a city park, after all. Sure, one might see a piece of public art or two here and there in a park, but nothing like this. And public art nearly always has a feel having passed through some bureaucratic process. But this work was different. It was alive. Unmistakably, what I was looking at was outsider art, and the expression of a singular poetic sensibility.

What was an entire symphony of outsider art doing in a city park? I looked around for a little Asian man, but the place was deserted except for a woman with a baby stroller casually making her way around the park.

Cathryn Wellner's insight:

Ah...this story is the kind of chance meeting that makes life sing.

"Life is Easy" | KarmaTube

"Life is Easy" | KarmaTube | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it
"Life is easy" says Jon Jandai. "Why do we have to make it so difficult?" After pursuing "success" in Bangkok for several years, Jo dropped out of university to return to village life. There, he went back to the life he knew as a child, working 2 months of the year to grow rice (with an additional 15 minutes a day to grow vegetables), dug a couple of fish ponds, built his own homes using earthen bricks, and gave up buying clothes (he has so many clothes from friends and visitors that he has to give them away). Jo contends that to be happy, we cannot just rely on money; we have to reconnect with each other.

The danger of hiding who you are

The danger of hiding who you are | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it
Morgana Bailey has been hiding her true self for 16 years. In a brave talk, she utters four words that might not seem like a big deal to some, but to her have been paralyzing. Why speak up? Because she’s realized that her silence has personal, professional and societal consequences. In front of an audience of her co-workers, she reflects on what it means to fear the judgment of others, and how it makes us judge ourselves.
Cathryn Wellner's insight:

A brave and important step.

Marie's Dictionary | KarmaTube

Marie's Dictionary | KarmaTube | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it
There are only about 200 remaining members of the Wukchumni of central California, and Marie Wilcox is the last fluent speaker of her tribal language. Like most Native Americans, the Wukchumni did not write their language. The 80-year-old Ms. Wilcox has spent the last 7 years writing a dictionary of Wukchumni and giving weekly lessons to her daughter and other tribal members, but few seem dedicated enough to learn to speak the language fluently. With the help of her grandson, Ms. Wilcox is now recording the dictionary, as well as traditional stories like the "How We Got Our Hands" parable featured in this film.
Cathryn Wellner's insight:

My Lushootseed grandmother, the extraordinary Vi Hilbert, worked with a university scholar, other native speakers, and acolytes to create a lexicon of her language. This is heart work, cultural work, preservation-of-culture work.

Bilingualism changes children's beliefs

Bilingualism changes children's beliefs | This Gives Me Hope | Scoop.it
Most young children are essentialists: They believe that human and animal characteristics are innate. That kind of reasoning can lead them to think that traits like native language and clothing preference are intrinsic rather than acquired. But a new study suggests that certain bilingual kids are more likely to understand that it's what one learns, rather than what one is born with, that makes up a person's psychological attributes.
Cathryn Wellner's insight:

Another good reason for learning a second language.
