To Persuade People, Tell Them a Story

To Persuade People, Tell Them a Story | hoola baloon "Sharing Economy" | Scoop.it

"Paul Smith had 20 minutes to sell the CEO of Procter & Gamble, and his team of managers, on new market-research techniques for which Mr. Smith's department wanted funding. As associate director of P&G's PG -0.39% market research, Mr. Smith had spent three weeks assembling a concise pitch with more than 30 PowerPoint slides.

On the day of the meeting, CEO A.G. Lafley entered the room, greeted everybody and turned his back to the screen. He then stared intently at Mr. Smith throughout the entire presentation, not once turning to look at a slide.

"I felt like maybe I hadn't done a very good job because he wasn't looking at my slides like everyone else," says Mr. Smith, who also noticed that the other managers didn't seem very engaged. "It didn't occur to me until later that he did that because he was more interested in what I had to say than in what my slides looked like."

At best, your PPT slides can only SUPPORT your message. The more refined or rarified your audiences get, the more refined or rarified your slide deck needs to get. They're 'paying' for your professional advice/opinion, not your PPT ability.

If they worked out what dance teachers have to pay to dance to music, the figure would have been much more shocking. The elephant in the room in this story is music licensing.

Steve Gillies's curator insight, October 9, 2013 8:20 AM

I find music helps when I'm researching, collating data or writing something not too demanding but it has to be instrumental - a singing voice is too distracting for me.

How Movie Crowdfunding Works

How Movie Crowdfunding Works | hoola baloon "Sharing Economy" | Scoop.it

Just how does crowdfunding work in the movie industry? Sponsume.com, a funding platform for different projects, illustrates, through an infographic, how this works. It shows some key facts and statistics about this funding mechanism. The procedure begins with a creative or breakthrough movie concept. Over a predetermined period of campaigning, teams are able to raise necessary funds to support their movie. Some campaign teams do not reach their goal, and some achieve great results. The infographic also highlights the benefits of this funding platform, other than generating funds and support for your movie.

6 green crowdfunding platforms - Green Entrepreneurship | hoola baloon "Sharing Economy" | Scoop.it

Green crowdfunding is a niche that is becoming more popular. Popping up around 2005, online crowdfunding is used by people or organisations to collect funds from individuals for their business ideas and initiatives. Well-known examples of online crowdfunding platforms are IndieGoGo (2008) and Kickstarter (2009). In 2012, there were over 450 crowdfunding platforms which makes focusing on niches important to differentiate. Below are 6 green crowdfunding platforms to keep an eye on.

Marty Koenig's curator insight, May 10, 2013 12:37 PM

People keep saying "I don't have any money, that's why I'm doing a crowdfunding campaign.". Let me tell you, that's a tough road. Many of these tools below cost some money. You'll want to plan for that. Get a job first, or have your friends and family five you $1,000 so you can have a small chance at a successful campaign.

I moderated a panel last week called "Crowdfunding Successes" with four successful Kickstarter raises. The very 1st question I asked the panel was, "What is the one thing you will do different next time?" Every one of them said "Next time we will get more exposure, do better PR and better marketing. We learned that the right way is to pay someone to do that instead of trying to do all that ourselves."

Dave Phillipson's comment, May 11, 2013 12:02 PM
I love Marty's comments because he's so spot on!

We often hear about the 'Million Dollar Wins' but we don't hear that they spent $50k - 150k in a media campaign in order to do so.

There are many extolling the 'virtues' of Crowdfunding.   There are many more who claim they are experts on the matter.   We hear stories every day of stories of great things.    What we don't hear, is that there are just as many failures.   The famed Kickstarter project has 85,000 smartwatch orders to fill ... $10 Million down the tube, no product to ship.

This is a common occurrance in Crowdfunding.  In a 'revovering econony', we need less crowdfunding - sucking money out of circulation - and more resources such as www.GlobalCEOspace.com which for over 25 years, has been helping Entrepreneurs succeed.
