So you want to be a vet? Class of 2017 admission most competitive yet for Virginia Tech program

So you want to be a vet? Class of 2017 admission most competitive yet for Virginia Tech program | Hoofcare and Lameness | Scoop.it

A record-breaking 1,220 prospective students submitted applications to the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine last fall, representing the fourth largest applicant pool in North America, according to figures from the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.

For several years in a row, the college has seen gains in application numbers for its Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, up 11 percent this year alone.

@HoofcareJournal writes: Fewer than one in ten of the applicants will be chosen to enroll at Blacksburg; the class of 2017 will have only 120 seats.

That means that roughly only one in ten applicants will be selected.

Of these, 50 will be from Virginia, 30 from Maryland, six from West Virginia, and 34 from other states and countries.

Nationwide, about 6000 people apply to enter US veterinary colleges; most apply to five different schools. Virginia's program offers a farrier, Travis Burns, on the faculty and plenty of exposure to equine lameness through an innovative curriculum.

Maybe that is part of the appeal!
