Jockey Club Chairman Phipps Calls for Transparency via Immediate Disclosure of Derby Horses' Vet Records

Jockey Club Chairman Phipps Calls for Transparency via Immediate Disclosure of Derby Horses' Vet Records | Hoofcare and Lameness | Scoop.it

Another day, another press release.

But wait a minute...If you read to the end of this one, there was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Jockey Club Chairman Ogden Mill Phipps authored a press release today, an update on US Thoroughbred racing's status in the face of allegations of welfare abuse and corruption deep inside the sport.

While the majority of the release focuses on steps related to overall inching forward toward a medication policy that would put US racing more in line with other major countries, the ending was a surprise, as Phipps suggested something that could happen right now--today, in fact.

He wrote:

"I propose that veterinary records of every horse entered in this year’s Triple Crown races be made immediately available. The New York State Gaming Commission does this, but only for a three-day period from the day of the race. I suggest a much longer period: 14 days.

"In fact, that was the principle behind the 2013 recommendation of The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Safety Committee to create a centralized database of all treatments and procedures administered to horses in training. A majority of states already mandate this kind of reporting, but there is spotty compliance and, with few exceptions, little public disclosure.

"As I’ve said previously, enough is enough.

"All of us need to look ourselves in the mirror and make sure we are doing all we can not only for the good of the game, but for the welfare of the athletes, the integrity of competition and the survival of the sport.

"The disclosure of veterinary records would be a good place to start."

Flash fire injures farrier refilling propane tank - Salmon Arm Observer

Flash fire injures farrier refilling propane tank - Salmon Arm Observer | Hoofcare and Lameness | Scoop.it

Burns from a flash fire inside a pickup truck with a canopy sent a Deep Creek farrier to hospital Wednesday.

The man had been shoeing horses in the morning and had stopped at the Co-op, Salmon Arm Gas Bar to refill a large propane tank mounted under the canopy. He was disconnecting the filling line from the propane tank, which was close to a small forge....

Fran Jurga's insight:

@HoofcareJournal writes: While I'm sharing this news story from Salmon Arm, British Columbia today out of concern for farriers' safety, it is also timely. While farriers use propane all year, most people are heavy consumers during the summer months, when they need it for their grilling parties. And they can often be in a hurry when refilling tanks.

Accidents happen, we all know that.

I hope this farrier will be ok and that anyone who reads this will be reminded of the power of that propane tank.
