I’ve received a lot comments about the image, many asking for more details on how I created it. When I tell people I used R, the reaction I get is roughly what I would expect if I told them I made it with Microsoft Paintand a bottle of Jägermeister. Some people even questioned whether it was actually done in R. The truth is, aside from the addition of the logo and date text, the image was produced entirely with about 150 lines of R code with no external dependencies. In the process I learned a few things about creating nice-looking graphs in R.

 

Transparency and Faking It

My first attempt at plotting the data involved plotting very transparent lines. Unfortunately there was just too much data to get a meaningful plot — even at very low opacity, there were enough lines to make the entire image just a bright blob. When I increased the transparency more, the opacity was rounded down to zero by my graphics device and the result was that nothing was drawn.

The solution was to manipulate the drawing order of the lines. I used a simple loop over my data to draw the lines, so it was easy to control which lines are drawn first using order(). I created an ordering based on the length of the lines, so that longer lines were drawn “behind” the shorter, more local lines. Then I used colorRampPalette() to generate a color palette from black to blue to white, and colored the lines according to order they were drawn.

Lockheed Martin is a security and aerospace company engaged in research for system design, development, manufacture and integration. The first large-scale big data visualization implemented from their Vizrt collaboration is MED-E, a dashboard specializing in Energy, designed to graphically illustrate layers of high-volume information about the status of energy resources, distribution and supply. For example, WindOptimizer is a MED-E suite of cloud-based services distributing real-time sensor data, including weather forecast prediction and wind energy supplies, so that wind farms, power companies and other energy companies can manage wind resources more cost-efficiently.  

 

Vizrt R&D teams in Europe and designers and support in the United States worked with Lockheed Martin to design a system that produces data visualization to a high standard but at the same time remains flexible in its application so that several different industries can use the product, customising it for their specific purposes.  

For Vizrt, developing the MED-E platform meant pushing Viz Artist and Viz Engine as a live data harvester and interactive visualization platform. Petter Ole Jakobsen, Vizrt’s CTO in Bergen, Norway said, “For MED-E, we’re taking multiple silos of data sources and coalescing them into one, scalable, big picture visualization representing all these different data layers. We are also doing this live when live data is available.”

Translating data into accessible information

Citizens and (government) agencies create and collect a lot of data, which they are now opening up for reuse more and more. This dashboard makes use of the latest open data from a wide range of municipal services. By using the Linked Data API from the CitySDK project , this City Dashboard becomes easily transferable to other cities using the same interface. The CitySDK Linked Data API also makes information searchable and available on demand, enabling developers to create applications such as this dashboard.

How to use the City Dashboard

A city consists of many elements, shown on this dashboard as the following domains: transport, environment, statistics, economy, social, cultural & security. For each domain, the actual status is shown, based on blocks of 24 hours. The data is refreshed every 10 seconds. The information is captured in charts, graphs and on a map of the city. Larger dots and darker colors symbolize higher values and vice versa. On the map, you can choose which layers you want to see: from only one domain to interesting combinations and all of them together. Personalize what you are seeing and try to discover the city of Amsterdam on a whole new level!

Moritz, who most frequently works on what I'd class as "cool data set vis" projects, tells me he usually requests a data sample and some answers to a few questionsclarifying the context and basic motivation of the project before starting:

 

Why are we doing this?What are you hoping to achieve?Who are we targeting?How is the end product going to be used?How are we publishing?What data do we have available?Which other existing materials should we take into account?Which constraints do we have?Who is responsible for what?Who else is doing something similar?

 

For Moritz, answers to these questions help him understand why the client thinks a data visualization is important, and also help define success criteria for the project. He says, “Often, both the client and I realize that half of these questions cannot be answered yet, but that's fine, as long as we make sure to answer them along the way.”

For graduate student Deven Vignali of Libby, the three-dimensional data visualization center at Montana Tech has made his life easier.

He’s using the $60,000 state-of-the-art software and tracking system to conduct research for his master’s thesis. He’s proving that passive seismic acquisition techniques can be used to monitor geo-thermal resources, as in hot springs.

It’s the fastest high-performance computing system within Montana academia, said Jeff Braun, head of the Tech computer engineering and software engineering departments.

Consider Vignali’s perspective:

“It reduced my simulation model run time from about 18 hours to about three hours, so it positively affected my project,” said Vignali.

The system has 10 teraflops of theoretical speed and 1.5 terabytes of memory. Translation: It is equal to between 200 to 400 times the memory of a typical home laptop computer.
