Curation as a tool for teaching and learning

What is curation anyway, and how can it be used as a tool for student and teacher learning? This essay will investigate what curation is and the different contexts it is used in. Why is it important; who are the curators, what motivates them and what makes a great curator? What processes and tools are used for curation and what digital literacies are required for successful curation? It will conclude with an investigation into ways teachers can use curation both with and for their students and as a tool for their own professional learning and a brief look at some curation tools.

luiy's curator insight, July 10, 5:25 AM

MindRDR, as the app is called, links up Google Glass with another piece of head-mounted hardware, the Neurosky EEG biosensor, to create a communication loop.

The Neurosky biosensor picks up on brainwaves that correlate to your ability to focus. The app then translates these brainwaves into a meter reading that gets superimposed on the camera view in Google Glass. As you “focus” more with your mind, the meter goes up, and the app takes a photograph of what you are seeing in front of you.

Making art out of the data of everyday life

Making art out of the data of everyday life | Homo Numericus Bis | Scoop.it
For followers of a growing self-discovery movement, the quantities in our lives can say a lot about its quality—and be transformed into art.

Via Carla Gentry CSPO
Mlik Sahib's insight:

"Granovsky's recording of personal data isn't merely an obsession and a compulsion. He's part of a social movement known as "quantified self," which encourages the collection of data to serve a higher purpose. "The point of tracking is self-knowledge," he says. "I want to be the best person I can be."

People have been tracking personal data for as long as there have been devices to measure it, but quantified self didn't begin until 2008, when Gary Wolf and Kevin Kelly, two editors at Wired magazine, realized that technology was making it easier and cheaper to track personal data. Smartphone apps not only can record your location, how many steps you take each day, or how much you toss and turn when you're sleeping, they can also export the data into spreadsheets and charts and graphs so you, the user, can make sense of it."

"Once you know how much you're sleeping, it's not intuitive anymore," Granovsky explains. "You can see results when you cut down on caffeine. That's where numbers really help."

But it's not just about numbers and self-improvement, or even keeping track of whether you flossed (though Moschel says that tracking did prevent a lecture from his dentist). Quantified self is also a philosophy. Or, as Granovksy likes to say, "data without context is meaningless."

luiy's curator insight, July 10, 6:00 AM

What else can we predict? In theory, any event that is not random, provided we have enough data to model the context. Examples include passenger load in public transports, availability of parking spots, traffic jams, waste production, energy consumption and revenues of a shop in a specific street. These all share a common underlying principle: use context rather than history to predict behavior.

In themselves, each of these predictions could lead to amazing new products and services. The real power though comes from integrating everything together and modeling an entire city and its interactions with people. For instance, if you can predict where people will need to go tomorrow, then you can create optimal bus routes, minimizing time to destination and walking distance, taking into account predicted traffic, weather and garbage collection schedules. In this ideal system, all services would be optimal and available to citizens at anytime. We call this new way of designing cities "Algorithmic Urbanism".
