Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, August 17, 2014 1:24 AM

I think this will become more the norm and not restricted regionally. Parents I speak to are increasingly concerned about the lack of real change in School. There is a concern School no longer serves the community and it is the community that serves the School.

Extra funding for drought-affected distance ed families

Extra funding for drought-affected distance ed families | Home Schooling | Scoop.it
An extra $250,000 in funding to be distributed this year through the Rural and Remote Education Access Program.
Terry Harding's insight:

Qld Government DE students are already funded at over $19,000 per student, on average. The state is sending those schools more funding. I think it is great that drought affected DE families in government schools are given extra help but it irks me that DE kids in non-government schools are funded at less than $4,000. The Qld government is not to blame as they do a good job in DE funding for non-government schools it's the COMMONWEALTH government that discriminates against DE kids in non-government schools.

Sweden’s high court all but bans homeschooling, family appeals to ECHR

Sweden’s high court all but bans homeschooling, family appeals to ECHR | Home Schooling | Scoop.it
After the Swedish Supreme Administrative Court ruled that a family cannot homeschool their eight-year-old daughter because they do not have “extraordinary circumstances” surrounding their need to teach from home, they are appealing their case to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
Terry Harding's insight:

Again, Sweden demonstrates its anti-human rights position, as does the European Court of Human Rights.

The best though in this article is, "Humans have rights, states don't".

States are meant to maintain the freedoms and dignities of their citizens.

Homeschooling is about a deeper connection

Homeschooling is about a deeper connection | Home Schooling | Scoop.it
If you have children, are considering having children or interact with any young people involved in the educational system, I highly recommend seeing a new documentary film called Class Dismissed. The movie describes homeschooling and focuses on a family in Los Angeles who chooses this path for their children and highlights the successes and challenges involved. I was able to see the film at a screening held by the Bucks Learning Cooperative, but there are more screenings in the Philadelphia area.
Terry Harding's insight:

A movie about Home Schooling. It had to happen some time.

Attention Small Government Conservatives: You Should All Be Homeschool Advocates | Home Schooling | Scoop.it

Terry Harding's insight:

This writer sees the issues of raising children and subsidiarity very clearly. I do not propose an anti-government agenda by posting this. However, it is refreshing to see an advocate for social conservatism stating that home schooling is clearly an issue of freedom and social stability. ... Thanks Calvin.
