How Smart, Connected Products Are Transforming Competition

How Smart, Connected Products Are Transforming Competition | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
Information technology is revolutionizing products. Once composed solely of mechanical and electrical parts, products have become complex systems that combine hardware, sensors, data storage, microprocessors, software, and connectivity in myriad ways. These “smart, connected products”—made possible by vast improvements in processing power and device miniaturization and by the network benefits of ubiquitous wireless connectivity—have unleashed […]
Home Design Network's insight:

Smart, connected products offer exponentially expanding opportunities for new functionality, far greater reliability, much higher product utilization, and capabilities that cut across and transcend traditional product boundaries. The changing nature of products is also disrupting value chains, forcing companies to rethink and retool nearly everything they do internally. Smart, connected products raise a new set of strategic choices related to how value is created and captured, how the prodigious amount of new (and sensitive) data they generate is utilized and managed, how relationships with traditional business partners such as channels are redefined, and what role companies should play as industry boundaries are expanded.

Ashley iKidz dealers to cross-promote new movie “Home” | Furniture Today | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
Home Design Network's insight:

The promotion, called “The Galaxy’s Greatest Home Sale,” runs Feb. 27-April 30. Dealers have until Jan. 13 to sign up.

“Home” revolves around a human-alien relationship that develops during “the road trip of a lifetime” after Earth is conquered by the Boov, an alien race in search of a new home, according to a summary at the Internet Movie Database.

Flora Stopher is the owner of Imagine Advertising, the Norcross, Ga.-based firm that will provide all marketing and advertising materials for the promotion and will execute what she calls “an omni-channel marketing strategy” in print and online.

“DreamWorks is reaching families with young children,” she said. “That’s also the iKidz demographic. It’s a great fit.”

Retailers participating in the promotion can distribute tickets to pre-screenings. They can offer customers such gift-with-purchase items as “Home”-themed plushies and lunch boxes. They’ll also be able to cross-promote with other “Home” movie sponsors in their local marketplaces.

7 new Wink products for $100 or less just made the smart home a lot cheaper | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
Quirky unveils seven more smart home devices for its Wink platform. The gadgets range from light switches and outlets, to customizable sensors.
Home Design Network's insight:
Quirky is on a mission to bring the smart home to everyone through it’s own platform Wink. Thanks to partnerships with the Home Depot and General Electric, Quirky says it’s got 100,000 people using the Wink app alongside compatible products. It’s been a rapid ascent for the small startup and Quirky wants to keep it going. The company announced seven new products on Tuesday at an event held in its headquarters in Manhattan, New York.

Quirky aims to help average, every day people build their own personal smart home, one connected device at a time. Every device is relatively cheap, especially in comparison with big-name products like Nest and others. Of course, many of the more expensive products, including Nest, are compatible with the Wink app. Quirky introduced the Wink Hub a few months ago, which aims to connect all the different smart devices in your home, regardless of the frequency they’re on, be it Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, or what have you.

Home Design Network's insight:

Voice now officially supports MMS when Verizon customers are involved, so there shouldn't be rude surprises when either end wants to share more than just text. Google is simultaneously adding native MMS photo support for everyone who uses Voice in Hangouts, so recipients can see pictures in-line rather than click on a link. Reports from users suggest that upgrades may not have reached everyone yet, so don't fret if people are still receiving links. Provided everything falls into place, though, you'll have one more reason to stick with Google's internet-savvy service.

Home Design Network's insight:

There's a new idea for business and social development called “Design thinking.”

Design thinking outlines a five-step process, Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and test,  that leads a team through the stages of identifying and defining a problem, then brainstorming, prototyping and testing solutions. But, while a conventional design team might spend the lion’s share of its time on the last three steps – what some might think of as the actual designing – design thinking does the opposite, frontloading the process with a lengthy information-gathering stage known in DT-speak as empathy. Read on.... an excellent and thought provoking article.

How Your Specialized Knowledge Leads to Social Media Success | LinkedIn | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
Home Design Network's insight:

KNOWLEDGE will not attract money and success, unless it is organized, and intelligently directed, through practical PLANS OF ACTION, to the DEFINITE END of accumulation of money. Lack of understanding of this fact has been the source of confusion to millions of people who falsely believe that “knowledge is power.” It is nothing of the sort! Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action, and directed to a definite end.

‘What’s a smart home?’ asks almost everyone ever, according to a new survey

‘What’s a smart home?’ asks almost everyone ever, according to a new survey | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
A survey from the Consumer Electronics Association and Parks Associates found 62 percent of people were unfamiliar with smart home products, service providers, or where to buy such products.
Home Design Network's insight:

Are you very familiar with smart-home services and providers? You’re pretty much alone. Nearly two-thirds of broadband users are unfamiliar with them, according to a white paper from Consumer Electronics Association and Parks Associates. The market research companies conducted an online survey with 10,000 broadband heads of household earlier in 2014. Only 10 percent of respondents considered themselves “very familiar” with smart home products and services, and the number dipped to eight percent when it came to knowledge about where to buy such services.

Those in the know should expect more company in the near future, though. The report predicts the sales of smart-home devices — including thermostats, door locks, smoke detectors, and light bulbs — to grow from 20.7 million to 35.9 million by 2017.

Home Design Network's insight:

The resurgence of gray as the hot new neutral has also helped in pushing black to the backdrop. Yet, bedrooms in black are beautiful, stylish and have an inimitable visual flair that is hard to match. Black bedrooms can turn that small space into a chic refuge where the bold and the dramatic meet cozy, contemporary flamboyance! Black is one of the automatic choices in the color scheme when it comes to shaping cool bachelor pads. The bedroom is no different in this regard and the dark backdrop allows the beautiful light fixtures and the wonderful vase collection to shine through brilliantly. The ceiling, ambient light fixtures, the carpet and the bed are all draped in black to accentuate this effect. A perfect example of how fabulous lighting can alter the appeal of a dark room…

Brain-to-Brain Marketing: Creating Content with Consumer Science in Mind

Brain-to-Brain Marketing: Creating Content with Consumer Science in Mind | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
Psychology can help content marketers understand the conscious and unconscious factors influencing consumers’ behavior. Discover the potential of harnessing that power to successfully develop and adapt your strategies and campaigns.
Home Design Network's insight:

Studies demonstrate that the visual aspect of a product is the primary influencing factor to taking an action. Subconscious judgments are made within the first minute and a half, with up to 90% of the judgments based on color. The influence of color is complicated. Red is often presented as an action- oriented color and used to encourage consumers to make decisive purchasing choices. A Psychology Today experiment attempted to determine how the color of an online button would influence the number of completed health applications. Users who clicked the red button had a 34% greater sign-up rate than those with a green button. However, the red-button consumers progressed quickly through the information and forms, suggesting more impulsive decision-making behavior.
