WhatsApp’s Founder Goes From Food Stamps to Billionaire

WhatsApp’s Founder Goes From Food Stamps to Billionaire | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
The $19 billion deal to sell WhatsApp Inc. to Facebook Inc. started at Yahoo! Inc. more than five years ago, when Jan Koum became disillusioned at the way Internet companies were fixated on advertising.
Home Design Network's insight:

Their approach paid off. WhatsApp amassed 450 million monthly users -- twice as many as Twitter Inc. -- who send billions of messages a day. Yesterday, Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg bought their five-year-old company in the largest Internet deal since Time Warner’s $124 billion merger with AOL in 2001, a deal that will almost certainly make Koum and Acton billionaires several times over.

For Koum, 38, the windfall would stand in stark contrast to his years as a teenager, when his family relied on food stamps after emigrating from Ukraine. The experience of living in a country where phone lines were often tapped, instilled the importance of privacy in him, said Jim Goetz, a partner with Sequoia Capital Ltd., WhatsApp’s lone venture capital investor.

What the Ice Bucket Challenge Can Teach Us About Engagement

What the Ice Bucket Challenge Can Teach Us About Engagement | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been the viral event of the summer, but what can it teach social media marketers about engagement?
Home Design Network's insight:

According to Bob Cargill, director of social media at Overdrive Interactive, another crucial aspect to the success of the Ice Bucket Challenge is its social nature. "What both social media marketers and fundraisers alike can learn from the success of this campaign is to realize that in the era of the selfie, more people than ever are glad to show off their support for a cause or passion for a brand, especially if they have something to gain in the process," he says. The gain for the user, in this case, is to see him or herself as a part of the cause, namely "the personal satisfaction that comes from any philanthropic effort and the public acclaim they receive from their friends."

And finally, a major aspect of the challenge’s impact stems from its brevity, explains Rob Moritz, managing editor of the social newsroom at Innocean USA. He says, "The key from a social media marketing perspective is the fact it only takes a few seconds to do — or watch — and generates consistently entertaining, super-short-form content that’s as easy to replicate as it is to share."

10 Good Habits to Develop an Innovative Mind

10 Good Habits to Develop an Innovative Mind | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
If I could sum it all up, creativity is really about being able to see associations when others couldn’t. Being innovative, on the other hand, is about coming up with something others have not thought of. Whether is it inventing a new product or coming up with solutions to a ... Continue reading »
Home Design Network's insight:

Whether is it inventing a new product or coming up with solutions to a problem, innovativeness requires creativity because one has to be capable of connecting abstract ideas and facts with existing scenarios before creating something unique and different.

Granted, we are all wired differently (some of us are blessed with the natural inclination towards innovativeness and creativity), but this doesn’t mean that we cannot do anything to stretch the limits of our creative minds.

As Thomas Edison puts it, there is work to be done day in, day out before we could even get that stroke of genius.

"Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Accordingly, a genius is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework." – Thomas A. Edison

Mortgage Experts Say in Real Estate, Time is of the Essence

Mortgage Experts Say in Real Estate, Time is of the Essence | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
When it comes to buying a home, two experts say there's no time like the present.
Home Design Network's insight:

Looking to buy a home? Now's the time to get off the fence.

"It's really important to purchase a house in the next five months because we're only going to see prices skyrocket as interest rates rise and demand follows suit," says Ross Kenneth Urkin, Personal Finance Editor at "The Street."

Let's start with interest rates which Ace Watanasuparp of DE Capital says are slowly rising.

"Right around 4.25% in rates as of today. Last year, we were right around 3.5% so you do see that moderate increase in rates." says DE Capital President Ace Watanasuparp.

He doesn't expect a major jump this year, but says we could see rates of 5% in the next twelve months.

"Right now is the best time. I mean, if you look at rates in 1984, rates were at 12, 13%," Watanasuparp says.

Home Design Network's insight:

The home is called the White House due to its generous use of white paint on walls and ceilings. This color choice has a dual purpose: it creates a very modern, minimal impression and also reflects light to make the rather small home appear larger. The floors are a light-colored wood, and little pops of bright colors keep the interior from feeling boring. Fuschia storage units line some of the walls so belongings can be tucked away to keep the living space looking clean and modern.

Home Design Network's insight:

Whether you are laying out a living room for your first apartment or planning one for your new custom home, understanding the scale of furniture and its relationship to the room can help you create a comfortable and functional space. The first thing to keep in mind is that you want the proportions of the furniture to coordinate with the proportions of the room. Small-scale furniture can be just as comfortable as overstuffed upholstery if you shop wisely. A good rule of thumb is to buy the highest quality you can afford on things you use frequently, and save money on things you use less often.
