Why Our Brains Love Symmetry in Design

Why Our Brains Love Symmetry in Design | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
Ever wonder why we find symmetry so aesthetically pleasing? We'll tell you why our brains love it and how to create the look on your own.
Home Design Network's insight:

We all know an example of good interior design when we see it. In fact, most of us can make that judgment almost instantly. Have you ever wondered why that ability seems to come to us so instinctually, even though we may not be professional interior designers?

It all has to do with symmetry, or a sense of balance, that has been achieved within a space. Symmetrical design cues effect our subconscious, even when they are too subtle to be consciously acknowledged with our first glance. All of us are drawn to balanced images and tend to think them more aesthetically pleasing than their off-kilter counterparts.

As for why we love symmetrical spaces so much, you’ll have to read on to find out. Plus, you’ll discover how to bring a harmonious feel into your own interiors, regardless of your personal style.

Home Design Network's insight:

One of my most favorite talks on Ted.. This is a powerful argument crafted by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie about the danger of a single story. She narrates how as a child she grew up reading American and British literature and could not connect with the elements of the stories as they were out of her experience such as ginger beer and the weather. However, she accepted them and wrote about them because that was how she understood literature from the texts she had read. The characters in her stories she wrote in her childhood were white and blue-eyed. Her mental perception shifted when she encountered African writers and started writing about things that she had a personal connection with. Upon her move to America, she began consciously identifying herself as African, something she had never done before while growing up in Nigeria. She reminds us to not form evaluations of people or events from a single story.

Owner of Hawaii's Liliha Bakery says he underestimated power of social media: Slideshow - Pacific Business News | Home Interior Design | Scoop.it
Liliha Bakery on Nimitz Highway will have its "formal" grand opening beginning Friday.
Home Design Network's insight:

I have loved Liliha bakery for years

Peter Kim has issued a “heartfelt apology” to customers who received “unsatisfactory service” during Liliha Bakery’s opening of its second location on Nimitz Highway.

Kim said the July 9 opening was supposed to be a “soft” one, but people came out in droves, catching the restaurant way off guard.

The reason? “We underestimated the power of social media,” Kim said.

The restaurant was expecting to serve 200 or so people per day at the beginning. It ended up serving around 1,500, Kim said.

1500 customers in one day.. if we all could be so lucky........

Your employees represent and relate your brand to customers both online and off. Give your employees the training, information, and inspiration to become committed brand advocates, and customer experiences will improve along with business outcomes.
Home Design Network's insight:

Research shows that the two strategies should be intertwined, with company content targeting not only your buyers, but also the men and women who tell your story on the sales floor, telephone, or social channels day in and day out.

At some stage of the journey, customers will speak to or interact with one of your employees, even if they don’t meet face to face. When employees have a deep understanding of your products and services and a true appreciation for your brand, their enthusiasm will be infectious. And beyond building excitement, they will be able to answer specific and complex customer questions, and tell compelling stories rooted in their personal experience.

How can you raise your company’s brand awareness, increase sales, and reduce business risks, all in one fell swoop? Think outside the box to scale your distribution channels. Instead of finding ways to get more customers to come to you, figure out how to get your products or services to reach more customers.
Home Design Network's insight:

It makes sense to focus on widening your distribution channels if you want to build your brand. Having products available through multiple venues and in different locations will put your business on consumers’ radar who are in a wider market range. As consumer awareness rises, your profits can increase through higher sales and a decrease in per-unit costs. What’s more, using multiple distribution channels spreads risk, as opposed to selling through a single source.
