Antonios Bouris's curator insight, May 28, 2014 11:30 PM

"Suppose we made a section of road out of this material and housed solar cells to collect energy, which could pay for the cost of the panel, thereby creating a road that would pay for itself over time. What if we added LEDs to "paint" the road lines from beneath, lighting up the road for safer night time driving? What if we added a heating element in the surface (like the defrosting wire in the rear window of our cars) to prevent snow/ice accumulation in northern climates? The ideas and possibilities just continued to roll in and the Solar Roadway project was born."

Basic Things You Could Do To Improve Your House

Many people fear that taking on home improvement projects themselves will be too difficult, but the truth is, you just need to find the best way to accomplish them. As in all things in life, home improvement is easier with the right tools and information. By following the advice in this article, any home improvement project that you undertake will be a success. Small rooms can look dark and dull, but this can be changed. Light can be the answer! Clean your windows, and open your blinds. Natural lighting can add so much to a room; even seeming to increase the size. Keep your room free of clutter and paint the walls a pale color. All of a sudden, your small room will feel less cramped. To save space on your kitchen counters, install an overhead microwave oven. These microwaves replace the hood of the range and are available in many price ranges, depending on the features desired. These models use a recirculating filter, making them ideal for use at home or in settings outside professional kitchens. Spend time once a week to dust all home accessories. Dust and debris can build up with shocking rapidity; this not only makes your home less attractive but also introduces allergens into your air. Not only does cleaning eliminate dirt and dust, but it reduces the possibility that spiders, fleas, ants or other insects will settle into your home. A great thing about home decor is that oftentimes it doesn't have to match. You can buy a great dining room table and mix and match chairs. This is great for cottage and country-styled homes. Buying a table second hand and adding chairs from different places actually creates a great design element, as well as a sense of accomplishment. Give those used chairs a chance to shine! If you are short on cash and trying to figure out a way to create a unique backsplash for your kitchen, you can buy some nice patterned wallpaper. Meanwhile this may not be a permanent solution; you can switch out your designs often or keep it until you are able to afford tiling. You can even go as far as purchasing different patterned wallpapers and cutting them into small shapes to design your own wall mosaic as a backsplash. It is never a bad idea to purchase handheld fire extinguishers for your home. Before you buy an extinguisher, take a moment to read the packaging for information on intended usage. Some extinguishers are effective only against certain types of fires. Ideally, an extinguisher should be suitable for paper, grease, wood, electrical, and trash fires. This should also be under consideration as you determine which rooms will have extinguishers at hand. If you're looking for a low cost way to improve the look of your home's interior, add a fresh coat of paint. Make sure you choose a neutral color. Dark or drab colors can make a room feel oppressive and confining. Painting with neutral colors will give rooms a fresh, airy feeling of openness. Is your home filled with bare walls? Why not create a painting to put on your wall so that your home has a personal touch of flair and elegance. While you may not be an artist, any sort of art on your walls will look better than nothing on your walls. If you are a pet owner make sure that there are no lingering pet hairs or pet odors in the home when you are giving a showing. This is especially true for people that have carpets because the buyers will worry about whether these issues will cause them to have to replace them. Making changes to your bathroom can save you money on the long term. With newer equipment you are considerably reducing the risks of leaks and other issues. A dryer bathroom will last longer. When selling your home a nice bathroom will definitely increase the value of your home and help people make a quicker decision. Don't skimp on the type of paint you buy for the outside of your house. By choosing a paint which is superior in quality, your paint job will last much longer. Buying high-quality paint is expensive but your investment will be justified and painting your house will be quicker and easier with quality paint. You are better off spending the extra money for top quality paint, than having to repaint your home again in a few short years because the cheap paint didn't last. You will find carpeting throughout older homes, however, wear and tear will have taken its toll on most carpets. Wooden floors generally last longer and look more classic. Most supplies for home improvement projects tend to be items that would be valuable theft targets. Take the time to secure all building supplies while work is halted. If a property is secure--all entries and windows are able to be locked--storing supplies inside is a good idea. If the house is not secure, however, rent or lease a storage container to use, instead. Creating a utility room in your original home design is a very smart idea. In this way you can put all of your utility appliances in one place. If you can keep your heating and cooling system, water heater, and electrical panel all in one conveniently located area, it will be easier to service them, and you will avoid wasting a lot of storage space by having them in separate areas of your home. Most home improvement projects can be easy with the proper knowledge. If you've taught yourself the right steps, the whole process becomes much simpler to complete. Implement what you've just read and get started today.
