Jeremy Pollard's curator insight, June 22, 2014 8:48 PM

We all gained a great communications channel when LinkedIn bought Slideshare. Once you get past update posting on LinkedIn, and posting other peoples' pictures of other peoples' quotes - posting your own actual content is a great goal (and one of my New Year resolutions)

This is a good, practical article on how to re-purpose current content into a usable format for promotion via SlideShare

Jane Gardner's insight:

Even though we have a home office environment, these days, if there is more than one person, you'll want a computer for each person.  We have three computers in our home office with ethernet network and we can share files between computers and only be charged for one internet ethernet connection.  "In the old days" with dialup modems , you had to connect with different connections and it was slower connection.  There is no reason not to have your computers hardwired in ethernet network as all it requires is a 3-4 ethernet plugins on your router and drilling holes in walls to get the ethernet cable throughout the house.  I did my networking with 60 ft. of cable!

Why the company's brand is more important than the entrepreneur's - The Economic Times

Why the company's brand is more important than the entrepreneur's - The Economic Times | Home Business | Scoop.it
It will open doors for him and lend him an air of credibility, which increases the chances of the entrepreneur getting early in-roads.
Jane Gardner's insight:

*The other side of the Entrepreneur being the Brand for the Business!*

It is a delicate balancing act , according to this article, for an entrepreneur not to become more known as the Brand as the company grows.  If the business becomes identified as the CEO, then if the CEO has personal issues, it can affect the business. The story that comes to mind for me is Lululemon where the owner made a comment about larger women wearing his yoga pants and other inappropriate comments which hurt the company.

According to Saurabh Uboweja

Even internally it is sometimes a risk to have a larger than life brand image of an entrepreneur because when things go downhill, employees lose focus and trust in management. Like your customers and external stakeholders stop trusting you, your employees too lose faith.

From Prison to Silicon Valley: How One Entrepreneur Spun a Jail Sentence Into a Y-Combinator Backed Startup

From Prison to Silicon Valley: How One Entrepreneur Spun a Jail Sentence Into a Y-Combinator Backed Startup | Home Business | Scoop.it
Frederick Hutson shares advice for entrepreneurs with untraditional backgrounds who are seeking VC funding.
Jane Gardner's insight:

Have the statistics and business model solid when presenting to investors

What a great story in Entrepreneur about Frederick Hutson entrepreneurial spirit while in prison created an idea that became a business and fullfilled a need specific to the prison. Family send photos in the mail but Hutson thought why not have a service where family can upload photos and get printed out by inmates.

In the article, he mentions how even though they were able to do a small scale setup of the company with great results, Silicon Valley investors expect an app or software in technology field and his prison background made lots of investors hesitate. But he was able to do more testing of the idea which showed the potential of the business!

According to the article,

Early on,  ........sending 500 picture postcards to inmates advertising the service, directing them to tell their friends and family to visit their website. It was classic junk mail, but as Hutson told NPR’s Planet Money podcast, he had 135 paying customers by the end of the month (for junk mail, a 1 percent response rate is typical), which confirmed what he already knew in his gut: The need was real, and the business plan was viable.
