Artist/ Writer and Child Survivor Peter Hein has written two books and numerous stories about hiding, and life after WWII; the Holocaust informs all his work. "De Onderduikers" is about Life in Hiding, "Het zesde jaar", suggests (rightfully so) that WWII did not end after five years, but continued after the so called liberation in 1945.

Holocaust Surviving Generations 1 through 6

Holocaust Surviving Generations 1 through 6 | Holocaust Holland | Scoop.it

I'm 2G, the children of my generation are 3G, some of them already have offspring, that's 4G. Journalist Simon Hammelburg states the effect of the Holocaust will be felt through the sixth post WWII generation. G6. Geez.

Museum Night Amsterdam - 14 . Castrum Peregrini – Intellectual Playground | Holocaust Holland | Scoop.it
Judith van Praag's insight:

To visit this place in the darkness of the night, a house bought by Gisèle van Waterschoot van der Gracht, an artist and activist, who hid Jewish young men during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands must add to our imagination, our understanding of a moment in time, so dark. At night, after the shutters came down her charges and friends would hold a salon, intellectual food in hungry times.

After the war Gisèle would marry the former mayor of Amsterdam d’Ailly.

Judith van Praag's insight:

To be thirteen during WWII or the aftermath. Astonishingly honest docudrama shows how a young boy, sole survivor of a Jewish family, betrayed by a neighbor who was after their house, returns from concentration camp after the war to be betrayed once again by people who promised to safe keep his family's valuables, and the woman who now lives in his home.

The late Professor I. Lipschits coined the term "kleine sjoa", the small Shoah Jewish people experienced upon return from the death camps.

When Is It OK to Call Someone a Nazi?

When Is It OK to Call Someone a Nazi? | Holocaust Holland | Scoop.it
Heated debates have erupted in the U.S., Israel, France, and Britain over the past few weeks about when it is appropriate to use "Nazi" to describe someone you dislike. I propose a simple set of rules to guide our judgment, illustrated through four recent examples.
Judith van Praag's insight:

Growing up in the Netherlands there was no debate necessary. A Nazi was a German soldier who answerd to Hitler's dogmas. Even Dutch Nazi sympathizers and collaborators weren't called Nazis. Some high ranking Dutch SS volunteers might have become Nazis, Dutch traitors A member of the NSB, the National Socialist Alliance was called an NSB-er, and that acronym became a curse that stuck even after WWII. We did not call NSB-ers Nazis. Collaborators, yes. Nazi lovers, yes, but not Nazis.

The episode of the Jerry Seinfeld show in which we were introduced to the Soup Nazi was only partially funny to me. Yes, I got that the merchant all but pummeled customers to stay in line, and I got that there was an analogy, of not getting soup if you didn't behave, but for the sake of mindfulness of others' sensitivities, I only half heartedly gave in to the humor.

To call someone, or even your self, because of an interest in p's, q's, apostrophes and commas a Grammar Nazi is tasteless. To call anybody a Nazi just because they're not letting you have your way is downright obnoxious. But then, that's a choice of style too, isn't it?

Spoken Sound Monument 'Reciting 102.000 Names' in the Netherlands

Spoken Sound Monument 'Reciting 102.000 Names' in the Netherlands | Holocaust Holland | Scoop.it

For six days and five days starting January 22nd, the names of murdered Dutch Jews, Sinti and Roma will sound across the grounds of former Nazi transit camp Westerbork. The recital will end on the 27th of January at 3:30 p.m. local time, the moment when 70 years earlier concentration camp Auschwitz was liberated.

Marjoleine Oppenheim over boek Over Zij En Ik

Marjoleine Oppenheim over haar moeder.

Ari Folman (The Congress and Waltz with Bashir) is to produce an animated film based on Anne Frank's life. He will also write and direct the film.

Now I realize the house on the Prinsengracht and the organization started by Otto Frank in Switserland are two different entities. Learn something new every day, especially thanks to the WWW.

This is exciting news, if only because so many more people of all ages who might not take in a movie with real life actors may want to watch an animation movie. Ironic? So be it.
