Holocaust History, as Told by a Survivor

Holocaust History, as Told by a Survivor | Holocaust Education | Scoop.it
Laszlo Schwartz, once mostly silent about his harrowing childhood as a prisoner of the Nazis, now spends much of his time telling his story in German classrooms.
Azrieli Foundation's insight:

" "Survivors’ stories, like the ones Mr. Schwartz recently told at the Martinum Gymnasium in Emsdetten, are especially important for younger generations who feel increasingly detached from the crimes of their forebears, educators say. Firsthand accounts provide an emotional link to the atrocities that other forms of memorialization simply cannot duplicate." "

Mohammed Dajani Daoudi teaches about the Holocaust to Palestinians although he insists it is impossible to do so.

Azrieli Foundation's insight:

“It is a sign of respect for the truth. When truth is denied or ignored, it destroys those values one cherishes. It is the right thing to do. Being criticized for doing it does not mean not to do it. Holocaust denial and distortion is historically wrong and morally unacceptable; Lessons of the past help avoid their recurrence in the future....Without knowing about evil, we cannot understand the meaning of good. To make this world a better place we need to show empathy and compassion for the suffering of others.”

The Holocaust Just Got More Shocking

The Holocaust Just Got More Shocking | Holocaust Education | Scoop.it
The Germans had vastly more work camps and ghettos than anyone knew.
Azrieli Foundation's insight:

Thirteen years ago, researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum began the grim task of documenting all the ghettos, slave labor sites, concentration camps and killing factories that the Nazis set up throughout Europe.

What they have found so far has shocked even scholars steeped in the history of the Holocaust.

40 Years Later: Storytelling, Memory, and Justice

40 Years Later: Storytelling, Memory, and Justice | Holocaust Education | Scoop.it
Storytelling is crucial to the fight for justice in every realm, in no way more so than in knocking those of us outside a conflict out of our oblivion and lack of empathy.
Azrieli Foundation's insight:

quick piece on the power of storytelling in promoting justice and fighting indifference

"...storytelling becomes an essential element in mobilizing public opinion and collective action both during and after a crime against humanity, and in the discourse on accountability in the aftermath of atrocity. These instruments of culture are an invitation to fight repression and preserve a link to the past and a hope for the future."

Azrieli Foundation's insight:

"The real irony, inherent to any xenophobic attitude, is that we each are foreigners, different and unique in some way particular to us; if not to some other far-off culture then to our very neighbours. That is a wonderous thing, the very raison d’être for compassion, tolerance and the dignity of self-worth."

Telling Personal Stories From the Holocaust Makes History Come Alive

Telling Personal Stories From the Holocaust Makes History Come Alive | Holocaust Education | Scoop.it
I visit New York City classrooms to talk to students about my grandfather, an Auschwitz survivor.
Azrieli Foundation's insight:

"It’s not the first time these students have heard a story of persecution and suffering. They’ve most likely covered the Holocaust by the time I enter the room. But the medium in which they’re hearing it is entirely new and intimate. This highlights a void in the way history is currently consumed in the classroom."

Remembering the Holocaust: Column | Holocaust Education | Scoop.it
Azrieli Foundation's insight:

A succint, impassioned piece on why Holocaust rememberance and education is so important and can play a crucial role in combating indifference that could set the ground for any teaching of the Holocaust.

"The most important message is that the Holocaust did not have to happen. It challenges us to think about why the Holocaust happened and asks us to consider how one of the world's most educated and advanced societies could collapse and embark on a years-long campaign of war and genocide unlike anything seen before or since."

The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains

The Science of Storytelling: Why Telling a Story is the Most Powerful Way to Activate Our Brains | Holocaust Education | Scoop.it
A good story can make or break a presentation, article, or conversation. But why is that? When Buffer co-founder Leo Widrich started to market his product through stories instead of benefits and bullet points, sign-ups went through the roof.
Azrieli Foundation's insight:

Part of Holocaust education is to transmit ideas and concepts that promote courageous, humane, inclusive thinking, and one the most effective way to that is through narrative. Here is the science behind the intimate power of storytellling to move and engage the listener, the student. This helps to explain the important role of Holocaust survivor memoirs in Holocaust education.
