Gut feelings: the future of psychiatry may be inside your stomach

Gut feelings: the future of psychiatry may be inside your stomach | Holistic Nutrition Health and Wellness | Scoop.it
Her parents were running out of hope. Their teenage daughter, Mary, had been diagnosed with a severe case of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), as well as ADHD. They had dragged her to clinics...
Ellen Naylor's insight:

I have suffered from foggy brain much of my life and can definitely trace the connection in my experience between my gut's health aka digestion and my brain. When I have indigestion, I have foggy brain. When I don't, I think pretty clearly, provided I have had enough sleep. I think a good night's sleep promotes a healthy gut and a clearer thinking brain. Healthy digestion is one of the focuses of my health coach practice. It's easy to have empathy with clients when this is what you have experienced since childhood.

Heart Meds vs. Plant-based Diets: Which Comes Out on Top?
One Green Planet
Lifestyle interventions that include plant based diets and exercise will not only reduce risks for heart disease but also just about any chronic disease out there.
Ellen Naylor's insight:

I have read so much about the side effects of statins, and have several friends who experience these. When my heart goes weak or my cholesterol too high, I will first look into modifying my diet and lifestyle before taking statins. The worst side effect, not mentioned in this article, is muscle soreness. One of my friends had trouble walking after a while on statins. Sometimes the side effects outweigh the benefit of taking meds.

Candida Diet 101: Foods To Eat & Foods To Avoid

Candida Diet 101: Foods To Eat & Foods To Avoid | Holistic Nutrition Health and Wellness | Scoop.it
What the heck is candida, anyway? It's a nasty little fungus that, if overgrown, can set up camp in your body and wreak havoc on your body, causing irritability, exhaustion, and digestion
Ellen Naylor's insight:

I suffer from candida and this is one hell of a diet to follow, but it seems to work. When I go off it, I suffer from indigestion and foggy brain. Enough foggy brain syndrome as you age without a second contributor.

Digestion will be one of my focuses when I become a certified health coach. If you have taken a lot of antibiotics or birth control pills for many years, it is likely you might have it too. Most autistic children have candida, and following this diet helps them out a lot. Google Donna Gates & the body econlogy diet to learn more.

Ellen Naylor's insight:

It's interesting how many calories are in Trail Mix. Those so called "health bars," contain lots of sugar. The Luna bar contains 20 grams of sugar, while a Crispy Creme donut contains 10 grams. I don't like the taste of those health bars, and the ingredients list is lengthy and contains words I can't pronounce, so I wonder what they are doing to my body. I'm not saying go out and eat Crispy Creme donuts, but it's interesting that what's being marketed as "healthy choices" don't appear to be that healthy. Big $ advertising at work again. Too bad there isn't as much advertising for fresh, wholesome foods.

This is not the first time I've heard this advice. In fact, since last year I started to be conscious on what we eat(with my family). There were already 2 documentaries about health awareness, one produced by HBO and the other one was produced by BBC. Both documentaries exposed the causes of diseases, which is food...the kind of foods that supermarkets are selling. Both documentaries are very long, but it's worth spending the time during the weekend instead of watching non-sense movies. Find both documentaries here: http://sgnetics.wordpress.com/2013/08/24/the-men-who-made-us-fat-a-health-awareness-documentary/

This was 3 years ago and he is still battling Big Food including its advertising of unhealthy salty and/or sweet processed food using bright colors and appealing to kids. He recommends that we buy organic food. Love his quote, "We can pay the farmer (for organic food) or pay the hospital."
