The top 20 ways to boost your immunity to colds and flu without using a vaccine

The top 20 ways to boost your immunity to colds and flu without using a vaccine | Holistic Nutrition Health and Wellness | Scoop.it
The top 20 ways to boost your immunity to colds and flu without using a vaccine   1) Take a vitamin D supplement every day. Check our Vitamin D guide for details about choosing the proper dosage. 2) Get as much sunlight as you can for as late into the year as you can manage. Even getting sunlight on just your face helps produce more vitamin D in your body. 3) Drink immune-boost beverages like organic Cocoa Mojo, which contains a blend of 4 medicinal mushrooms. And it tastes like a delicious hot chocolate! 4) Use a high-quality air filter in your home to filter out bacteria and mold spores that may be circulating inside your home. 5) Get regular exercise to boost your circulation and immune strength. This exercise should be frequent and moderate. Do not over-stress yourself at the gym, or your immune system will be temporarily compromised. 6) Take supplements especially designed to protect your respiratory tract. These include Lomatium, Osha, Elderberry and more. You'll find many of these in the herbal medicine cabinets offered at the NaturalNews Store. 7) Take measures to minimize your exposure to immune-damaging chemicals such as those you'll find in laundry products, cosmetics, personal care products and fragrance products. The artificial fragrance chemicals found in most of these products are carcinogenic and cause liver damage. 8) Get off all medications that you can safely eliminate! Work with a naturopath to accomplish this, of course, as quitting medications cold turkey can also be…
Ellen Naylor's insight:

Wow, so many suggestions to combat flu and colds. Good advice at the start of this season. I think eating healthy, getting regular sleep, cleaning hands often and minimizing immune damaging chemicals (soaps, detergents, etc) top my list. Also reducing dairy which for many causes inflammation.

Ellen Naylor's insight:

I have long believed that going on diets is fatalistic and shortens our lives. I love this conclusion in Dr. Katz's blog:

"We diet alone; we should, instead, live it together. The fundamentals of healthful living and weight control are far less mysterious and far more accessible than we allow ourselves to think; there is just a mountain of marketing and malarkey between here and there. There is the suspension of sense, the denial of science, and profit-driven predation. There is fatalism, and there is folly."

Sleep Deprived? 3 Tricks to Get Through the Day

Sleep Deprived? 3 Tricks to Get Through the Day | Holistic Nutrition Health and Wellness | Scoop.it

Maybe you have a newborn at home or maybe it's that insane week before an impossible deadline. Whatever the ultimate cause of your sleep deprivation, occasionally we all have times in our lives when we can't heed the sensible advice of experts to get enough sleep.

When these crunch times hit, you might feel like curling up into a little ball under your desk and sleeping away the day, but unfortunately you need to find a way to soldier on. Science can help. New York Magazine's consistently fascinating Science of Us column recently reached out to sleep researchers to round up advice on what to do when you've had a really, really lousy night's sleep.

All of these scientists stressed that consistently sleeping less than seven or eight hours a night is a truly terrible idea, but they did have tips to offer for these emergency situations, which writer Melissa Dahl organized into a helpful timeline for the sleep deprived. Here are a few of the tips you'll find in the complete post:

I prefer to get enough sleep. When I don't I find that being out in the sun helps. I also find a short 15 minute nap can go a long way. I wonder how you master those days when you're sleep deprived? It's unfortunately such a common phenomenon. I read that 1 in 6 fatal driving accidents is caused by sleep deprivation in the US.

Nutritionists warn of dangers in Paleo dieting

Nutritionists warn of dangers in Paleo dieting | Holistic Nutrition Health and Wellness | Scoop.it
The Paleo diet might be heading for extinction, like the cavemen who inspired it, after the country’s leading nutrition body warned Australians that the popular eating plan is potentially dangerous.

Via Peter Mellow
Ellen Naylor's insight:

Nutritionist Rosemary Stanton says we should applaud the low content of processed foods, sugar and salt advocated in Paleo diets but asks, “why exclude plant-based foods such as wholegrains and legumes when a wealth of evidence confirms their health value?

“Two major hazards associated with the Paleo diet are the high content of red meat and the lack of wholegrains. Cancer experts rate a high intake of meat as a convincing cause of bowel cancer while wholegrains reduce the risk. These two factors also increase long-term risk of heart disease.”
