In understanding stress, it's important to discern good stress, or ''eustress'', e.g. taking up a challenge, from bad stress, or ''distress'', e.g. losing your temper.

 

Stress is basically a matter of perception and communication. So the suggestions given here are useful.

 

In addition to a physical exercise, learn to practise a relaxation routine, like meditation.

And, I'm adding a 7th tip...my personal favorite way to keep up my energy, my spirits and my soclal connection...dance.  There is no such thing as two left feet - the truly masterful instructors can teach anyone the basics of a dance. 

 

The great thing about dance is there are so many kinds to choose from...country two step not your thing (definitely not mine), you can waltz, salsa, hustle, tango and more.  Most dance communities are filled with like minded people, open to trying new things and not interested in being a couch potato.  Most dances can be done at a basic level with great enjoyment.  I personally love Argentine Tango and while you can do a lot of fancy moves with it, the beauty of the dance is in the basic walk.  Even the greatest spend hours practicing the walk and when done properly can be as mesmerizing as any lift, spin or dip you'll see out there on the dance floor.

 

For singles, its a great way to meet people and for couples, there's nothing like learning to connect and communicate without words.  This holiday season, I invite you to avoid the blues by giving dance a try...just experiment with a lesson or two in a group format and see if you don't find yourself smiling and feeling more energized.
