Floating Away: The Science of Sensory Deprivation Therapy

Floating Away: The Science of Sensory Deprivation Therapy | Holistic Health News | Scoop.it
“ Across North America “float houses” are increasing in popularity, offering eager psychonauts a chance to explore sensory deprivation.” I tried not to panic. I was floating effortlessly in a pitch-black tank filled with salty, skin-temperature water, wearing earplugs and nothing else. Within minutes I could no longer feel the sponge in my ears or smell the musty scent of water. There was no light, no smell, no touch and – save for the gasping of my breath and drumming of my heart – no sound.

What Happens To Our Brains When We Exercise And How It Makes Us Happier

What Happens To Our Brains When We Exercise And How It Makes Us Happier | Holistic Health News | Scoop.it
“ There's more to the mood-boosting properties of exercise than endorphins.” Exercise has been touted to be a cure for nearly everything in life, fromdepression, to memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and more. At the same time, similar to the topic of sleep, I found myself having very little specific and scientific knowledge about what exercise really does to our bodies and our brains. “Yes, yes, I know all about it, that’s the thing with the endorphins, that makes you feel good and why we should exercise and stuff, right?” is what I can hear myself say to someone bringing this up. I would pick up things here and there, yet really digging into the connection of exercise and how it effects us has never been something I’ve done.

It's a fact. Sitting is one of the worse things you can do. We like to think that a good workout can reverse the effects of a day spent sitting at a desk or in front of the TV. But, research is showing that the sitting is actually reversing all our fitness and exercise efforts...and more completely.

We've all heard the old adage "You are what you eat" but how often do we really stop and think about what we are fueling our body with? It is so easy to grab the nearest snack, and fill up on junk to fill our hunger without really being conscious of what effect that food is having on our body.

Sitting is sabotaging our health: Stand up for yourself

Sitting is sabotaging our health: Stand up for yourself | Holistic Health News | Scoop.it
"Sitting is the new smoking." That’s the buzz ricocheting around health circles, as a growing mountain of medical research decries our national addiction to sitting on our rear ends. As a health reporter, I’ve read the research, from the National Institutes of Health to the Mayo Clinic to the American Cancer Society, all of which warns that prolonged sitting leads to increased risks of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Not even regular exercise can undo the damage caused by such a sedentary lifestyle. That got me to wondering, did I have what some experts called “the sitting disease”?

Exposure to morning light, by itself, can help reduce body fat. | Holistic Health News | Scoop.it
To maximize your chances of fighting flab, new research offers some simple advice: Wake up early and go outside. People who loaded up on light exposure at the beginning of the day were most likely to have a lower body mass index, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE. That relationship between morning light and BMI was independent of how many calories the study participants consumed.

Why You Should Go Outside (right after you read this)

Why You Should Go Outside (right after you read this) | Holistic Health News | Scoop.it
"Turns out, there’s proof communing with nature makes you healthier and happier" Renowned yogi Eoin Finn says the positive energy you feel among ocean waves or towering Redwoods can lead to greater Zen and health. And research agrees. Finn says that the “vibrational transcendent energy” that yogis try to tap on the mat is often the same feeling you get when immersed in nature, when a brilliant, beautiful environment makes you suddenly feel super thankful and…small. “Yoga is the systematic reduction of ego. When our egos diminish, we open up to a greater consciousness. That consciousness is a connection I feel when I’m out in nature—and that’s the basis of health and spirituality.”

The Power Of The Plank

The Power Of The Plank | Holistic Health News | Scoop.it
“ Planks are a wonderful alternative, as they increase core strength and spinal stabilization while maintaining a neutral spine, thus eliminating the constant flexing and extending of the spinal column....” One of the big developments in core training over the recent past is the use of "plank" exercises. As a personal trainer in her 50s who trains many clients in that age range, I for one am a fan of planking for many reasons. But there are also situations in which this is contraindicated, which I'll discuss a bit later. Let's first look at the reasons that planks are recommended.
