The second leg of Andrew Graham-Dixon and Giorgio Locatelli's journey takes them to the heart of Italy and the regions of Le Marche and Umbria. After a snack of Le Marche style stuffed olives they uncover the Renaissance city of Urbino and the palace of Federico da Montefeltro. Scholar, connoisseur and commander of a private army; Federico is one of the driving forces of the Italian Renaissance. Then, in the dark depths of the Apennine Mountains, they explore one of the largest underground caves in the world, the Grotte di Frassasi. [...]

There is just slightly more than a month to go until Italian resale tax on property is lowered and investors are likely to be waiting with bated breath. The measure, due to come in on January 1st 2014, has been heralded as vital for the country to address its depressed property market, A Place in the Sun reported. It will see Land Registry Tax on a second home purchase lowered by €900 (£753.28) for every €100,000 of the sales price. [...]

Medieval Fun in Marche Region

Medieval Fun in Marche Region | Holidays in Marche | Scoop.it
HolidayinMarche's insight:

Our local towns have a passionate interest in their history, every August Servigliano in the Province of Fermo stages the “Knightly Tournament” of Castel Clementino, and "Giostra del Anello" - Joust of the Rings. In 1454 the Abbot of Farfa di Santa Vittoria in Matenano handed the San Gualtiero plain to the ancient Servigliano community. So the historical commemoration takes place every year. Five corners of the town compete in a spectacular game of courage and daring featuring their chosen knight astride galloping horses to joust rings, that I believe get smaller and smaller. The track, 880 meters long, is a figure of eight and is bordered by about 450 colored flags in wood. Covering it in a record time of 1'02 "8, means galloping at 14 meters per second or 50 miles per hour. In each round the duelists are called upon to race around the track, at the cross of the figure 8 is the centrepiece with long arms holding the rings high ready for the Knights to spear.

Before the knights' tournament is the procession: 500 pre-Renaissance costumes enliven the parade, the result of painstaking research and implementation. Including the meticulous observation of paintings from the Renaissance, by artists of the time such as Crivelli, Bronzino, Ghirlandaio, and Piero della Francesca. The winner gets the aspired Palio defending the district colours, and of course the adoration of the crowds. The performance of the flag wavers is something special and charming and set to the military rhythmical music of drums and chiarine (long trumpets). Whole families are involved with even small children waving flags, and 4 or 5 days of celebrations take place in the village.

Indeed the musicians practice from June onwards, the rhymical drumming rising up our valley to colour the atmosphere of our summer evenings, along with the crickets!

Plan your holiday next year to coinside with the festival which is always on the Saturday and Sunday after Ferragosto (15th August).

The Best Aperitivo Appetizer: Olive Ascolane, stuffed green olives

The Best Aperitivo Appetizer: Olive Ascolane, stuffed green olives | Holidays in Marche | Scoop.it

Italians take aperitifs very seriously – or rather, the bite sized food that you eat when drinking an aperitif.  However sometimes a warm appetizer works better – something tasty and salty, maybe like an olive but with an added kick, incredible crumbed and fried olives. You could not stop at one (or two, or three…). Olive Ascolane typical of the region of Le Marche, on the Adriatic sea.

Large green olives, pitted and stuffed with an array of meats and spices, crumbed and then deep fried. Then imagine dipping one in some aioli before taking a bite into this tasty decadent little morsel. They take a little bit of time to construct but they are simple. We all love a foolproof recipe! You don’t need to serve them with aioli (garlic mayonnaise) – but it is a nice touch and balances the saltiness. You can use the recipe for aioli below or else one from an older post that uses roasted garlic (link is here). As they are appetizers, serve them with your favorite aperitif on the side, which for me is a Prosecco or an Aperol Spritz. Salute!

Olive Ascolane*
40 large green olives, pitted
60g roughly chopped good quality salami or sopressa
90g pork mince
90g veal mince
1 teaspoon fennel seeds, dry roasted
Flour
1 – 2 eggs, lightly beaten
Home made bread crumbs
Vegetable oil for frying
Zest of one lemon
2 teaspoons finely chopped rosemary
Aioli:
1 egg yolk
125ml olive oil
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon lemon juice (or more to taste)
1/2 clove of garlic, crushed
Sea salt to taste

The Winning Le Marche | Le Marche outpaces Tuscany as emerging holiday hotspot

The Winning Le Marche | Le Marche outpaces Tuscany as emerging holiday hotspot | Holidays in Marche | Scoop.it

The latest figures from I.stat, the Italian National Tourist Board, reveal that the previously undiscovered region of Le Marche is now outshining Tuscany in tourism growth.

Tuscany, famed since the 90s as one of the world’s top tourist destinations, registered an increase of 4.6% in foreign arrivals from 2012 to 2013, whilst the far more unknown neighbouring region of Le Marche saw impressive growth of 6.3% year-on-year.

With 389,313 visitors now arriving on Marche soil, more and more people are beginning to recognize that this Italian location has all the benefits of close-by Tuscany, seemingly endless rolling hills, beautiful open spaces and ancient hilltop towns, yet without the hefty pricetag. [...]

Deliciously Directionless: Ascoli Piceno - City of 100 towers (& faded marble glory) | Holidays in Marche | Scoop.it

As we drove around Le Marche, I was beginning to sink into the rhythm of "Slow Italy" - wandering around medieval towns, gaping at some real gems of Renaissance art, the mandatory evening passeggiata, followed by a local liqueur at the corner cafe - life in Le Marche is all about slowly savouring the moment, and then some more. One of my favourite places in the region was Ascoli Piceno, known as the city of 100 towers. While historical records show that the city had some 200 towers, today about 50 of them still stand - quiet sentinels, presiding over this medieval city built in marble.[...]

Ascoli Piceno - Dreaming In Italian

Ascoli Piceno - Dreaming In Italian | Holidays in Marche | Scoop.it

Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard of Ascoli Piceno. “What? Is that some kind of fish?” Well, no, it’s a beautiful city in the Marche. I had heard the name only as a type of Italian wine. Like all cities of any size it has a title; in this case “city of art”. Probably a bunch of cities have that some self designation. It’s major points of interest in the historic center seems to have been built 500-600 years ago although of course the city is much older. The sense of history is ever present in Italy. People live in houses older than our country. Daily life is lived in an environment of great beauty. Of course when living here it must just seem like background. One doesn’t wander around like an awestruck tourist all the time going about one’s daily life. [...]

Mariano Pallottini's curator insight, November 14, 2013 6:16 AM

This is how the author introduces himself:
My name is Joe Nance and I’m a long time Italophile. I think that my love affair with Italy began when a former girlfriend gave me a copy of the Basics of Italian cooking by Marcella Hazan . I’ve always liked to cook (since I like to eat) and was amazed that you could make such good things with so few ingredients. One thing led to another and I began to learn some Italian. I’ve now made 7 trips to Italy and hope to make many more. I have taken up the study of Italian after a long lapse and am enjoying it immensely. So this blog is centered around the food, language and travel in Italy. Along with a few digressions of course.
A few words about the title of the blog “Dreaming In Italian”. I have often heard that having a dream in an acquired language is a sign of a reasonable level of fluency and certainly of a comfort level with the language. That is certainly my goal for learning the language. Of course the subtext of the dreaming is the general admiration for many Italian qualities; the relative level of spontaneity, the generally good food and the openness of so many of the people there.

A Place in the Sun: Home or Away? | Hertfordshire or Le Marche, Italy | Holidays in Marche | Scoop.it

Jayne and Hendrik have recently been made redundant from the security company they worked at, and with a bit of cash at their disposal and no ties now holding them to their current home, they are looking to invest. Jayne has always fancied Italy and would like a property in the Le Marche region. Hendrik on the other hand is more cautious, and is worried what the couple would do for work in a new country.
While they have a dream to start a holiday lets business for other expats and Brits abroad, neither of them have experience in this are and language barriers are also putting them off. Will they want the security of England or will they be willing to throw their plans out of the window and embrace a whole new style of living?
Le Marche lies on the eastern side of central Italy, between the Adriatic Sea and the high Apennine mountains and much of it remains unspoilt by the ravages of mass tourism. The average annual temperature is over 15 degrees with the hottest temperatures hitting the high twenties in mid-summer. Famed for its truffles, olive oil and fresh fish, Jayne and Hendrik will have no problems leaving a completely different lifestyle if they make the choice to relocate.

Just passed into my 57th year in grand style at a fantastic restaurant near Montemonaco in the Sibillini mountains.  It is called Il Tiglio and has a masterful chef, Enrico Mazzaroni, who has trained with the best Parisian chefs and has brought the best of French cooking and married it with the wonderful fresh ingredients from our Appenine mountains, like white and black truffles, new potatoes, and other fresh produce and meats cured in house.  I always have said, for everyday eating, italian food can't be beat for freshness, simple goodness etc., but if you tell me I am going to die tomorrow, I am off to the best french restaurant I can find.  Now I have found Enrico who does this marvelous mix of the two and tops off the great kitchen work with a marvelous wait staff and a room captain/sommelier who has put together the most impressive wine list I have seen in our region, full of nice choices from our province, our region, most other regions of Italy and international entries.  [...]

What I’m Drinking: Meletti Anisette

What I’m Drinking: Meletti Anisette | Holidays in Marche | Scoop.it

I was in Italy recently [...] This last time, I visited a city in Le Marche called Ascoli Piceno for the first time. It’s an off-the-tourist-track kind of a place by and large, but it has a lovely city center, all made of travertine, and some very lovely churches, and a history of pottery making. All good stuff. But perhaps best of all, it’s where the Meletti company is, a company known for making delicious imbibables. [...] What I didn’t know, though, until getting to Ascoli Piceno, was how amazing the Meletti Café is.
It sits right on the corner (in the below shot, back right) of the city center I mentioned, which is known as the Piazza del Popolo, and which is one of the prettiest piazza’s I’ve been in [...]
I ordered a Meletti Anisette, which is the most well-known of the Meletti offerings, and which is the finest anisette available anywhere. It has a layered anise flavor and an underlying sweetness that tastes pure and natural; it’s a liqueur that’s meant to be savored and not shot back, and one that mixes like a champion dancer into cocktails – but which has to be had solo (or with three very small additions) to be completely understood.[...]
