A War Photographer Embeds Himself Inside a Video Game

A War Photographer Embeds Himself Inside a Video Game | Hitchhiker | Scoop.it
The Last of Us Remastered is a post-apocalyptic video game released earlier this year on PlayStation 4 with an in-game Photo Mode, which freezes the game and lets players shoot, edit and share photographs of their achievements.

Minna Kilpeläinen's insight:

What is it like to play a role in a war game, when you have been on the scene in real life - as a photographer: "I initially played the game at home. But after a short time playing it, I noticed I was having very strong reactions in regards to my role as the protagonist: I hated it. When I covered real war, I did so with a camera, not a gun. At home, I’d play for 30 minutes before noticing I had knots in my stomach, that my vision blurred, and then eventually, that I had simply crashed out." - Ashley Gilbertson

Now, virtually anyone can be a war photographer from the comfort of the couch, and make breaks for coffee or food. The mythology is still strong, despite all the facts that deny it.

Scientists Demonstrate Remarkable Evidence Of Dream Telepathy Between People

Scientists Demonstrate Remarkable Evidence Of Dream Telepathy Between People | Hitchhiker | Scoop.it

Dream telepathy suggests that human beings have the ability to communicate telepathically with another person while they are dreaming. This isn’t a new concept, scientific interest in telepathy dates back to the fathers of the psychoanalytic movement. Freud, for example, considered telepathy and the implications of it with regards to psychoanalytic thought.

He also considered dream telepathy, or the telepathic influence of thought on dreaming on multiple occasions. Carl Jung believed in the telepathic hypothesis without question, and even developed a theoretical system to explain “paranormal” events of this nature. (2)

Poetically Beautiful Combinations Pair Nature with Sound Waves

Poetically Beautiful Combinations Pair Nature with Sound Waves | Hitchhiker | Scoop.it
While sitting at the riverside and watching its opposing coast, Anna Marinenko noticed that a line of reeds reflected in the water looked aesthetically similar to what she sees in music. The Ukrainian-based designer then made the visual connection between sound waves and nature; this discovery lead her to crafting the beautiful series entitled Nature Sound Form Wave.
Marineko’s works match the two different senses. Trees, skylines, mountains, and more are paired with varying musical waveforms, and the otherwise unrelated elements lay side-by-side to compose a single image. The poetic series features tall strands of grass that sway and play on the highs and lows in sound, while another combination matches a plane’s path almost perfectly to its audio counterpoint. Nature Sound Form Wave seems to highlight the unusual connections we can make when we take time to sit quietly and reflect.

Here is a short post packed with great material. What is one of the main reasons a really good story works so well? Because it builds empathy.

But what is empathy? It's often easy to get empathy confused with sympathy. But the two are not the same.

Read this post to learn why empathy is so fundamental to good storytelling and insights into how to bring this into your business storytelling.

Ali Gray: Online promotion of films used to be so simple: a few gifs and a grainy clip and you were set. Today, hashtags and social media rule. But what have we lost in the process?
Minna Kilpeläinen's insight:

Official web site isn´t enough to promote films.

"If your movie doesn't have a well-liked Facebook page, a dedicated Twitter following and a Tumblr account with at least a dozen animated gifs of your characters twerking, you might as well be promoting, like, a book or something."

Many Ways to Tell a Story: How Transmedia Is Transforming Education In and Out of Classrooms

Many Ways to Tell a Story: How Transmedia Is Transforming Education In and Out of Classrooms | Hitchhiker | Scoop.it

Cheryl Frose's curator insight, June 12, 6:03 PM

Transmedia, a broad descriptive word that literally translated means “across media” and encompasses many strategies that transverse industries, is generally regarded as the use of multiple media platforms to tell a story or story experience. Though the word “transmedia” is thought to have entertainment franchise origins, its adaptation for education purposes is both valuable and becoming more and more common. While teachers like Sansing are using coding and programming in their language arts instruction, others are taking advantage of increasingly sophisticated apps and interactive media for classroom use.

David Collet's curator insight, June 12, 9:28 PM

I guess this another favorite topic for me. Imagine using transmedia to teach maths and include cross over language components. After all maths has a language of its own.

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, June 18, 12:15 PM

Transmedia approaches encourage (or even force) people to actively acknowledge and design for a fluid and multi-dimensional, rather than linear, media environment.  For the human brain, stories are not constrained by what's on the page. Transmedia begins to replicate how we think and encourages producers to innovate in each platform to create multiple touchpoints that facilitate our natural ability to imagine, project, expand and experience.
