In fact, there is evidence of both biological and chemical weapons in the ancient world as far back as 189 B.C. "Petrochemical fires were a common tool in the Middle East, where flammable naphtha and oily bitumen were easy to find."

According to the evidence, the Persian soldier may have ignited the deadly fire to which he added a compound of burnt bitumen and sulfur, giving off a dense fog of poison gas that turned into sulfuric acid in the lungs of the soldiers. Archeologists suggest that the Persian soldier may have "lingered too long to ensure it was alight, and was himself overcome by fumes ......"
