5 tasty YouTube channels perfect for history geeks | History resources for South African Teachers | Scoop.it

Yup. I’m a history geek. I’m a member of the History Book Club, I love maps, I stop and read every historical marker before driving past, I spent most of a morning three weeks ago quizzing the docent in the Northfield, Minnesota history museum on the 1876 raid by the James Gang, and I have the Band of Brothers DVD series memorized.

So where do I go when I need a good YouTube video?

On January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries overthrew Cuban leader Fulgencio Batista, who fled to the Dominican Republic. These pictures show scenes of turmoil in the capital Havana, as the climax of revolution was reached. The mob was out of hand. At-last, Dr Fidel Castro himself arrived. Time and again, he was held up by the crowds. He spoke to them of the new regime now being inaugurated: a regime, now formally recognised by Britain.

His influence over the Tsar and his wife are actively frowned upon and this week 100 yeas ago he is assassinated. At the same the Russians are facing the German Army on the Romanian Front.

Tokio Jokio | 1943 | World War 2 Era Propaganda Cartoon

Tokio Jokio is a 1943 comic Looney Tunes cartoon, an animated short film produced by Warner Bros. It was intended as an American propaganda film against Japan while the two countries were at war. As with most of the Looney Tunes shorts produced during World War 2, the film consists of a series of rapid-fire, short gag vignettes.

I thought this might be useful since it gives one a feel for the mood at the time, but it is also pretty racist. Watch before use!

Hunters hunting tiger and shooting same. In the Town women buying clothes. Hats etc. CU woman in hat. Model displaying gowns etc. Women and men working in factories. The workers do physical jerks. Funeral of Pavlov- Lying in State and coffin carried through snow covered cemetry. Lenin poster. Shot of Voroshilov and Stalin with small girl.

The battlefield at the Somme flared into action this week with the same disastrous consequences. The soldiers fighting for the British Army even analysed the problems they were facing in the repeated assaults but to no avail. At the same time, the Serbs, supported by French troops, continued towards their home and fought for Monastir on the Macedonian Front.
