Handel and Hendrix

Handel and Hendrix | Historical London | Scoop.it
Live music is an important part of what we do at Handel & Hendrix in London to bring to life the world of these two musical greats. Rehearsals, masterclasses, Saturday talks and the weekly Thursday Live concert series celebrate Handel’s London in the 18th century and take place in the historic Rehearsal and Performance Room where Handel would rehearse his latest operas or oratorios with musicians and singers. From February 2016 we will expand our season with special Hendrix themed events."
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
Handel AND Hendrix? Quite a musical cocktail.

I visited several years ago, during Open House London. It was filled with music and people that day. I will return for a quieter glimpse into the 18th century and imagine Handel there, composing The Messsiah

Disappearing #London

Suggs interviews photographer Terence Nunn.
Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:
Sad to see so much of old London disappear almost on a daily basis these days. Some places about to be demolished dont hit the headlines and might get overlooked Which is why the people who record  and "save" humbler buildings are to be praised and remembered in their own right. Great job!

Queen's Park, NW6

Queen's Park, NW6 | Historical London | Scoop.it

"Queen's Park was laid out in 1887 and retains much of its original structure and early features, including the bandstand. Part of the land had been used as a showground for the Royal Kilburn Agricultural Show in 1879, and in 1885 it was offered to the Corporation of London by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, along with Gravel Pit Wood, 'for the preservation as open spaces forever'. The park was opened by the Lord Mayor of London in 1887, one of the many parks created in celebration of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The surrounding residential development followed soon after this"

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

Stumbled upon this church today.

Unusual murals.

Interesting snipoet : Sir Laurence Olivier was a choir boy here which led to  his first acting role as Kate in The Taming Of The Shrew, performed in the church.

Charles Remy Mackintosh was also a regular visitor.

The blackened interior ( due to? clouds of incense over many years? Smog creeping in from the street?) and exterior were restored to their former glory in the 1990s

Ursula O'Reilly Traynor's insight:

The entrance to this vast underground chamber is not for the faint hearted, those who dislike crouching in a confined space. That's a temporary discomfort and the rewards promise to be mighty. Fitzrovia Chapel To Reopen

Fitzrovia Chapel To Reopen | Historical London | Scoop.it

COMMUNITY-BASED FUTURE FOR GRADE II* LISTED FITZROVIA CHAPEL

"A charitable organisation has been created to ensure a strong future for a grade II* listed chapel that has been preserved and extensively restored within a large mixed use development in London’s Fitzrovia.

The Fitzrovia Chapel Foundation will take over the running of the chapel within the Fitzroy Place development on the site of the former Middlesex Hospital.

The chapel will be referred to as the Fitzrovia Chapel, reflecting its key role in a resurgent Fitzrovia. Created as a hospital building the chapel was always open to all-comers, and the Foundation will be continuing this tradition. With no religious affiliation, the chapel will not discriminate on grounds of philosophy, sexuality or belief, in a true commitment to celebrating 21st century London’s diversity."
