Kara Halsey's curator insight, April 24, 9:44 AM

According to MTV, a new documentary entitled Rebel Music will be premiering April 30th. The documentary presents the ongoing debate: how powerful is music in society? Many of the artist presented within the documentary face social injustices within their countries. The artists' music discusses specific issues each of them face.  Many of the artist have been blacklisted or seen as political rebels. Others have even been arrested. Many critics say that hip hop culture would not span past the United States with a positive message; however, one can see hip hop gives these artists a voice. It allows them the express their frustrations and to spark a change. If hip hop culture was not as powerful as it is portrayed to be, why are these artists undergoing censorship battles over their music? In the words of one artists, "The truth must be told a bout our government and it is my right to tell it."
