Jason Berel's curator insight, August 12, 2015 6:19 PM

This is an article written by a blogger who has researched into the topic of why album sales are declining in the Hip-Hop genre. The article suggests a strong relation to how album sales are down because of the rise of pirated music. Though, pirated music is also digital media, so it also presents a point to my topic.

Eric Polite's curator insight, November 11, 2015 11:36 PM

Today most artist are leaning toward the digital approach for selling albums. As a consumer at times it is a lot easier to get the latest song on the go via Soundcloud, iTunes, Spotify etc.

• Music album sales in the United States by genre 2012 | Statistic | Hip-Hop Album Sales Decreasing | Scoop.it
The statistic above presents data on music album sales in the United States in 2012, broken down by genre. In 2012, 8.1 million jazz albums were sold in the U.S.
Carlton Ross's insight:

This shows that R&B and Rap sales are much lower than Rock, but it doesn't even give Hip-Hop its own genre. Obviously you can't give a calculation of actual Hip-Hop sales if they're going to submerge it with rap. I believe that Hip-Hop should be on its own, considering it has its own meaning.

Sales of rap music are declining as more are critical of its message | Hip-Hop Album Sales Decreasing | Scoop.it
NEW YORK -- Maybe it was the umpteenth coke-dealing anthem or soft-porn music video. Perhaps it was the preening antics that some call reminiscent of Stepin Fetchit.
Carlton Ross's insight:

This article shows that Hip-Hop/Rap sales are declining because of lyrical content. A poll was taken and 50% of the respondants said that hip-hop was a negative force to society. Teens are catching on to the negativity.

This articles focus on how album sales and also just the sale of any rap music is greatly effected by the message behind a track. The lyrics of most rap songs are in some way abrasive to the ear of different people. Some people do not relate with what is said and others dont understand why such a message would even need to be painted.

Rap sales falter on charts | Hip-Hop Album Sales Decreasing | Scoop.it
By Kaleb Schuppner, Editor

2011 marked the first time in years that rap and hip hop were not the most popular genres among teenagers aged 13-17.
Carlton Ross's insight:

According to this article, Hip-Hop sales are decreasing due to other genres becoming more popular. Pop songs often talk about love, life, and heartbreak, while many artists in the hip hop/rap industry focus on more provocative subjects. Hip-Hop sales are also decreasing because of marketing strategies, artists are switching over to become pop artists. Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Drake, and J. Cole have all topped the billboard for pop.

This brings attention to how the growth of a hiphop star also leads to rising music expectations for the crowd they attract. It pays attention to the effect the illegal downloading has on the hip hop industry and how the lust for music and getting it anyway you can decreases the ability of an album to create sales.
