Using a Mini Angle Grinder for Woodcarving

Mini angle grinders have been great additions to my tool box. Because these tools can accept a variety of cutting blades, grinding discs and sanding discs, I can use them for a number of different applications from cutting to sanding. Most importantly, used for woodcarving, the mini angle grinder is a great time-saver, when I am roughing out a carving.A variety of disks for cutting, grinding and sanding are available for grinders, such as my Arbortech Mini Angle Grinder.Although these power tools are much smaller than a full sized angle grinder, they demand your respect. With a sharp cutting blade, you can remove large chunks of wood in a snap. And with that much power, if you don’t use this equipment safely, it can snag and kick back on you, causing a serious injury.Holding the angle grinder in different positions allows you to make different types of cuts.Safety FirstWhen working with a grinder, always wear a full face shield. If a cutting disk snags, the tool can kick back on you

In one case a designer wanted to use a carbon fiber wrap film for cut vinyl lettering. I know this is not the typical application for these wrap films that the manufacturer intended. But designers will come up with all types of unusual applications for products.

Comparing SYNAPS Printable Polyester Paper to Vinyl Films

SYNAPS, the Ecologically Responsible ChoiceCompared to many other plastic films, such as vinyl, SYNAPS, a printable polyester paper is an ecologically responsible choice for indoor or outdoor applications, requiring long term durability. Unlike some vinyl print media, SYNAPS contains no lead and no phthalates, which can endanger the health of children. And unlike PVC, SYNAPS contains no chlorine. Here’s the danger with chlorine. In manufacturing, chlorine can promote the formation of dioxin, which is a carcinogen. In addition, when you burn PVC you can release toxins into the atmosphere. Because of its toxicity, PVC is rarely recycled. It’s also a reason that countries in Western Europe and Japan have limited its use. Regulations in the State of California, are also imminent, where PVC will likely be banned in the pharmaceutical industry from use in blister packaging.Generally, polyester products are classified in the number 1 category. So why doesn’t SYNAPS qualify for that des

What Causes Liner Curl?

Would you like paper or plastic? In the sign, screen and digital markets, vinyl film manufacturers generally pick paper release liners. Plastic film liners are more frequently used for label stock. Paper liners afford many advantages compared to film liners. They are very heat stable…more stable at high temperatures because plastic can deform. Paper also provides consistent performance. Most importantly, paper liners are more cost effective than film liners. The disadvantage is that because it is paper, it can easily gain or lose moisture depending on the shop environment. When I worked for screen printers, it was a common practice to condition the stock the day before a print run to stabilize the sheet, so it would lay flat on the bed of the press. Sheeted material was racked face to face so the release liner could gain or lose moisture depending on the shop environment.

Cleaning Laminated Prints

Before you deliver prints to your customers, instruct them on the right way to care for their new graphics. That way they can never say that they didn't know, because they were never told. To clean laminated prints, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner. The cleaner should be neither strongly acidic nor strongly alkaline.

Removing Surface Protection Masking from Plastic Sheet

Usually removing the paper surface protection masking on plastic is easy. It is simply a matter of starting in a corner and rolling it off of the surface. Many manufacturers and fabricators recommend rolling the masking around a cardboard tube. Over time the adhesive can build in adhesion to the surface of the plastic.

This novel technology certainly filled a big void in the market. Any of the curling issues that printers encountered when printing on some pressure-sensitive vinyl films with solvent and ecosolvent inks were resolved, because latex inks are water-based. Latex inks also dry instantly, if cured at the recommended temperatures. That meant that you could laminate prints immediately after printing. Solvent inks, on the other hand, are not completely cured after printing. Before laminating printing vinyl g
