But now phrase and exact are no longer – exactly phrase and exact. In Larry Kim’s recent article, having a "true" exact or phrase match is no longer going to be possible. Close variants keyword matches will trigger keywords for not just singular and plurals, but for misspellings, acronyms, stemming, and abbreviations. What You Need to Know: Start building out your negative keyword list - now. Review your keywords carefully and think about what terms you do not wish to show up for. Especially for stemming keywords – there can be many variations that can be matched against the root word.

With close variant matching, you will see an increase in your impressions and clicks, because your keywords will be matching against more keywords. Per Google, close variant matching gives customers an average of 7 percent more exact and phrase match clicks. What You Need to Know: If you have a small or fixed monthly PPC budget, you will want to carefully watch your SQR report.

Pros and Cons to the Steve Jobs School of Project Management | HigherEd Marketing and Web Operations | Scoop.it
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

Fascinating take on Jobs as a manager and organization leader. I'm not convinced that he was project managing. It seems to me he was driving strategy. Worth a read as the article makes you reflect on people you have met in your career, though probably not quite extreme. The term I beleive most used is micro-manager. If you don't own the company this style will probably not work well for your career.

Yes, Project Management Skills Trump Tech Skills - Dice News

Yes, Project Management Skills Trump Tech Skills - Dice News | HigherEd Marketing and Web Operations | Scoop.it
How do we get across the message that PM skills are more important than technical skills? We're glad you asked.
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

I highly recommend this article for anyone thinking of hiring a Web Project Manager or who is interviewing for a Web PM job. Most Web Project Managers start out as technical people: designers or programmers, user interface designers or content writers. This article discusses firms that want the Web PM to act as a backup if someone is sick, I've been in interviews where colleges design the position to be part-time Web Project Manager/part-time Content Writer or programmer in a misguided effort to save money. This approach is doomed to failure because projects will inevitable run into miscommunictions, cost overruns and miss deadlines. This hurts the organization's reputation and gravely damages trust between stakeholders and the Web team.

Why is this dual approach so ill conceived?

The primary job of the Web Project Manager is to ensure communications between team members, stakeholders and upper management. Any of the technical positions require concentrated work periods. You cannot succeed in a creative position if you are continually interrupted. A Web Project Manager's job by definition is one in which you are seeking information and relaying information. Think of all the audiences the Web PM deals with: vendors, finance, people throughout the company, meetings with VPs or Directors, Marketing staff, Sales staff and the list goes on and on. Your day as a Web PM is one of constant communications and relaying communications.

Solution?

Don't agree to be a failure. Instead, explain you will work with the team to develop the members so they can back each other up. Content writers learn UX design. Many graphic designers know some programming. Rather than agree to use your outdated programming skills explain that you will identify multiple skills of the team members and set up backup roles among the Web team. Then go on to show how you will hire at least one person who has had multiple roles over the years and can back up several team members. When asked to work two part-time positions (which we all know are two full-time positions) make the business case for a full time Web PM and a part-time technical position with financial numbers. Discuss how the college should either outsource or hire the needed part-time designer or programmer or analytic expert. Propose this as a solution in your interview and you'll get the job and lead your team to success. If you don't get that job, don't feel bad for yourself, feel bad for the poor person who agreed to lead a team that has little chance of succeeding.

IT Project Management

IT Project Management | HigherEd Marketing and Web Operations | Scoop.it
In today's world, where projects need to be done yesterday with the few resources that we have, it is vital that a common methodology is shared across all projects.
TonyaPriceConsulting's insight:

I once worked at a university where a VP made fun of my PMP certification claiming they didn't have time for Project Managemenet - they had too much work to do. Times are changing and here is Old Dominion University's description of their PMO. Note, not only do they have full time project managers at the PMO but over 40 departmental PMs. Project Management teaches us how to deliver projects on time and within set costs. Valuable skills given today's pressure to keep costs contained and the proliferation of Web project needs.
