I would recommend reading "Teaching Like A PIRATE" to go along with this book.  Check out Dave Burgess's site http://daveburgess.com/.  IMHO both are ideal books for future and current educators.

While I have used CastingWords for all my video transcription needs in the past, I am always interested in learning about new alternative resources on this front.

Today I was kindly invited to check out TranscriptionStar, an online full video and audio transcription service, accepting a wide variety of file formats and providing finished work in four different file formats: PPT, TXT, PDF, XLS.

As long as you can upload your audio or video file, TranscriptionStar has everything you need to get a professional transcription (English only) even within 2 hours from your own upload (super rush TAT)*.

*I have not been able to verify this claim, nor it is clear to me, even after looking at their official rate card what the cost would be for a 2-hour rush job

For normal 24-48 hours transcriptions prices are in line with other services of this kind.

See more details here: http://transcriptionstar.com/pricing.html

Apple jumps on free-university-education bandwagon with new improved iTunes U

Apple jumps on free-university-education bandwagon with new improved iTunes U | HigherEd - iTunesU or University | Scoop.it

And the next one to offer a new way for people to get a university education for free is... Apple. Sure, they've had iTunes U for a long time, but with their new interface, lecturers/authors can "push" their latest lectures out to students, giving the impression of a live course, where students receive new materials or assignments at specific intervals.

At the same time, the newly launched, free "iBooks textbooks for iPad" app enables teachers to produce beautiful, media-rich e-books for students - without having to pay for software like InDesign. (See http://www.apple.com/education/ibooks-textbooks for an almost tear-jerkingly feelgood video ad.) All good stuff, except for one thing: the "free" in "free new app" is just that... it's a free app for everyone... who owns an iPad.

Thanks, Apple for showing us (again!) what's possible: I'm watching this space for the open source (or at least untethered-to-one-commercial-platform) answer to the challenge.

News Discovery Tools: Slices for Twitter Organizes and Auto-Curates Your News Stream Into Categories

News Discovery Tools: Slices for Twitter Organizes and Auto-Curates Your News Stream Into Categories | HigherEd - iTunesU or University | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Slices is a news discovery app that allows you to find the news that interest you by "slicing" the Twitter timeline into topic-specific categories, making it much easier to find what you are looking for.

From Pandodaily official review: "Slices offers 21 searchable categories – humor, technology, sports, and so on – that lead you to people and lists to follow. Included among those top-level categories is the “Live Events” option, which allows you to select an event – a football match, say, or a TV show – and follow Tweets from a curated list.

Also of note: "...it synchronizes between mobile devices and the Slices website (slices.me), which means it knows which Tweets you’ve already read, no matter where you access it from.

...The “Timeline Slicer” also outdoes Twitter’s Lists as a way to organize the people you follow into specific categories. They’re easier to set up and easier to access, ..."

Source: Pandodaily

Slices is available on iOS, Android and the Web.

Marketing Ops is called on to develop strategic and tactical plans on behalf of the marketing department. Being able to tell a story is vitally important to this process. Here is a good infographic about building the "story."

Marco Gabrielli's curator insight, August 13, 2013 8:30 AM

Il poster evidenzia gli argomenti chiave, necessari per sviluppare differenti forme di storytelling. I tre elementi principali sono:

1) la definizione di sette popolari tipi di trame (la vittoria sul mostro, diventare ricchissimi, la traversata del deserto, nuova consapevolezza, commedia, tragedia, rinascita) ;

2) l'identificazione di sette tipi di eroi presenti nelle diverse trame (Dracula, Cenerentola, Ulisse, Alice, Aristofane, Macbeth, A Christmas Carol);

Tools for Following, Unfollowing and Managing Lists on Twitter

Tools for Following, Unfollowing and Managing Lists on Twitter | HigherEd - iTunesU or University | Scoop.it

It’s been a while since SocialTimes did a round-up of the various tools that helped users manage their Twitter accounts by finding who to follow, following new people, unfollowing many people at once and organizing groups of users they follow into lists.

Since our last round-up, Twitter has restricted use of its API significantly, causing several tools to shut down. No longer functional areUntweeps, Just Unfollow, Twit Cleaner, Who Follows Whom and Tweet Effect. Tweeter Karma is still functional but has had to remove its bulk unfollow tools.

Brand Your Clips and Feature Your Best Video with the New YouTube InVideo Programming

Brand Your Clips and Feature Your Best Video with the New YouTube InVideo Programming | HigherEd - iTunesU or University | Scoop.it

Robin Good: YouTube has just released a new feature that allows any YouTube account holder to feature its brand logo across all of the clips in his channel, as well as the ability to promote/display a unique video clip that needs to be promoted next to each and every video he has published.

The first feature is called "Feature your Channel" and ReelSEO writes about it: "Feature Your Channel allows you to upload an image, whether your channel's avatar or a custom image, and you can place it in the top/bottom, left/right of the picture. You can keep the branding throughout the duration of the video, or you can customize the length that it lasts."

The second one, labelled "Feature a Video" "with this feature, you can push a video of your liking across every single video you have in your catalog. It places a thumbnail of the featured video into the corner of every video so that no matter which one a viewer is watching, it's there, ready to be clicked."

iTunes Ual ? | process.arts | HigherEd - iTunesU or University | Scoop.it

Many institutions don’t have the ‘foresight’ to create their own in-house open online video archive/platforms so have to rely solely on external commercial channels like iTunes as their primary platform or video archive. Commercial media channels really should be secondary channels not primary. I’m a big fan of commercial channels but I don’t think colleges should be putting all its eggs into one commercial basket, all videos produced by the institution should be made available and accessible at all times to everyone and be free from commercial fees, conditions and advertising.
