Integrating Active Learning with Clickers: Tips from a Faculty Workshop

Integrating Active Learning with Clickers: Tips from a Faculty Workshop | Higher Education | Scoop.it
How do you work on a problem with 200 students at once? How can you find out what 200 students are thinking? You ask them to “click”! A group of faculty discussed integrating active learning with clickers in a workshop led by Shawn Nordell and Beth Fisher of The Teaching Center. “Clickers,” or Classroom Response Systems, are small, handheld devices that allow students to respond to multiple-choice questions. They can be used to assess students’ understanding of problems or concepts, promote discussion of ideas, predict outcomes, elicit student misconceptions of material, and otherwise engage your students. It all starts with developing a learning goal and then developing a question that fits that learning goal. The second critical component is integrating small-group discussions that allow your students the opportunity to discuss the question and be prepared to explain their reasoning.

Change the Game for Girls in STEM: We Don't Need More, We Need Different | Higher Education | Scoop.it
The secret sauce for expanding our recruiting practices has to include family engagement. Families are girls’ most trusted resources and role models; family engagement and partnership is critical to opening STEM doors for girls. To be successful in engaging all families, programs need to meet girls and their parents where they feel comfortable.

How Peer Teaching Improves Student Learning and 10 Ways To Encourage It  | Higher Education | Scoop.it
Peer teaching is not a new concept. It can be traced back to Aristotle’s use of archons, or student leaders, and to the letters of Seneca the Younger. It was first organized as a theory by Scotsman Andrew Bell in 1795, and later implemented into French and English schools in the 19th century. Over the... Read More

PUCP wins two international awards in the "24 hour of innovation - global Hackathon"

PUCP wins two international awards in the "24 hour of innovation - global Hackathon" | Higher Education | Scoop.it

–Steve Jobs, 2005 Stanford

5 unconventional ways for academic libraries to solve problems and generate new ideas

5 unconventional ways for academic libraries to solve problems and generate new ideas | Higher Education | Scoop.it
Creative Thinking is great if you quickly want to generate lots of new ideas for a new library service on one end of the scale or if you have a problem that you’ve found difficult to solve on the other.
If you are reorganising or have some hard choices to make, and want support from your team, this can bring more energy and light-heartedness into sometimes heavy and loaded problem-solving.

Exciting Vision for Library of the Future

"With revolutionary shifts underway in education, research, teaching and learning, there has never been a more interesting time for libraries. This was the basic concept at the heart of the recent ‘Library Futures’ symposium held recently in Trinity.

A packed-to-capacity PACCAR Theatre in the Science Gallery heard the thoughts of a stellar panel of invited guests. First to speak was Chief Executive of the British Library Roly Keating, formerly of the BBC.

He was followed by the innovative Stanford University librarian Mike Keller. Mike is also director of academic information resources at the US university and a digital preservation advocate.

The line-up was completed by Bodley's Librarian Richard Ovenden, the senior executive at Oxford’s main research library the Bodleian, and Jeffrey Schnapp, founder and faculty director of Harvard’s metaLAB. Jeffrey spoke about possible scenarios for libraries in the digital age."

Bringing Project Based Learning to Life in the Social Studies Classroom

Bringing Project Based Learning to Life in the Social Studies Classroom  | Higher Education | Scoop.it
Most adults today, even many educators, were never exposed to project-based learning during their own schooling years. And so, it can be a bit hard to grasp the concept and to understand its benefits. After all, there is a curriculum timeline to meet, and certain knowledge and skills that kids must master; there are those tests coming in the spring.

The world of technology is changing what we really need to teach kids in school. Unfortunately, it seems that our state legislators and testing “gurus” haven’t gotten the memo yet. We are still trying to fit our schooling into old non-tech and non-reality-based models, when we should be preparing kids for the skills they will need to become lifelong learners and meet the demands of a workplace that is changing more rapidly than we can adjust to. If you want to know the contributions of the ancient Babylonians to society, you don’t need to memorize them and spit them out for a teacher. You can get online and find that information in minutes.
