Students Tuning Out Humanities Professors

Students Tuning Out Humanities Professors | Higher Education | Scoop.it

The humanities meltdown is a huge indictment of the academic fads and trends of the last generation.

Via Alberto Acereda, Ph.D.
Carlos Fosca's insight:

"Today’s humanities faculties that can’t build student enrollments are like people who can’t sell umbrellas during a rainstorm: great teachers teaching great books and great ideas are exactly what most students need. Unfortunately, too many people in the field in the last generation were interested in producing bad or indifferent teachers who taught dull and impenetrable books filled with tendentious and superficial ideas. And as for concepts like character and spiritual development, forget it. Fortunately, this seems to be changing among many younger faculty and grad students and there are grounds to hope that the humanities in America will regain some balance and poise."

Campus Suicide and the Pressure of Perfection

Campus Suicide and the Pressure of Perfection | Higher Education | Scoop.it
Ms. Holleran was the third of six Penn students to commit suicide in a 13-month stretch, and the school is far from the only one to experience a so-called suicide cluster. This school year, Tulane lost four students and Appalachian State at least three — the disappearance in September of a freshman, Anna M. Smith, led to an 11-day search before she was found in the North Carolina woods, hanging from a tree. Cornell faced six suicides in the 2009-10 academic year. In 2003-4, five New York University students leapt to their deaths.

Get with the program: the coders offering training for free | Higher Education | Scoop.it
‘Why are we not doing more to have coding colleges and technical, vocational education alongside university education?” This question, raised by Labour’s Yvette Cooper during an interview with the Observer in May, reflects a wide concern about the availability and equality of software training, an area with a reputation for being elusive, exclusive, expensive and overwhelmingly male.

How to Design Work Projects for Maximum Learning

How to Design Work Projects for Maximum Learning | Higher Education | Scoop.it
Skill development is clearly a major priority for companies and managers these days. Enrollment in learning programs has surged over the last few years to generate a global executive education market of over $70 billion a year. People are also being asked by their bosses or HR to attend conferences, read case studies, watch videos, and try their hand at simulations, all with the goal of picking up new ideas and techniques.

Only by looking at the future of U.S. colleges and universities through the wide lens of the nation as a whole will we ensure that diversity remains, but we don’t need a college at every exit along the highway anymore.

How MOOCs helped University of Hong Kong apply e-learning tools on campus

How MOOCs helped University of Hong Kong apply e-learning tools on campus | Higher Education | Scoop.it
E-learning has taken off since HKU launched its first online course last year, with benefits for on-campus education too

Vice-president of teaching and learning at the University of Hong Kong, Professor Ricky Kwok sees the global trend of MOOCs and flipped classrooms as "killing two birds with one stone". Lecturers can share knowledge and materials with the world, while refining their video lectures and assessments based on the diverse feedback through the online platform. These polished online-based tools are then repurposed for on-campus versions of the same courses.

Gay priest fired from chaplain job asks Pope Francis to meet LGBT Catholics in US | Higher Education | Scoop.it

"In May, Fr. Warren Hall was abruptly dismissed from his position as the popular campus chaplain at Seton Hall University in New Jersey because the Catholic archbishop of Newark said his advocacy against anti-gay bullying and his identity as a gay man undermined church teaching.
Now Hall has written to Pope Francis, asking that when the pope visits the United States in September, he speak out against such actions because they are "alienating" gay Catholics and the many others who support them." By David Gibson

Habits of Good Instructional Designers

Habits of Good Instructional Designers | Higher Education | Scoop.it

"Instructional design is a fascinating profession with a vast array of tools, guidelines, theories, and best-practices. If you are just getting started with instructional design, then all of this can seem pretty overwhelming.

As is the case in most professions, it is quite easy to get caught up in the latest “shiny object”. The latest tech toys when it comes to elearning are exciting, but they aren’t what makes or breaks an instructional designer."

Is For-Profit The Future Of Education In Brazil?

Is For-Profit The Future Of Education In Brazil? | Higher Education | Scoop.it

"Brazilian startup Descomplica (“Uncomplicate”) has raised an $8 million Series B to build an education entertainment company that the company hopes could actually change the future of education in Brazil."

Carlos Fosca's insight:

How Our Universities Are Failing Us

How Our Universities Are Failing Us | Higher Education | Scoop.it
The Closing of the American Mind dealt with the way academic relativism has failed our democracy, but it did not spark the kind of fruitful conversation that Allan Bloom hoped for; much less did it inspire a systematic effort to rectify the errors of modern academia. Today’s college students say they believe in democracy but cannot explain why, and neither can they explain what they are actually getting with their college education. In the past half century, higher education has gone through a democratizing revolution, with the result that more and more students are being sold an increasingly expensive product that neither their professors nor the deans and presidents of their colleges can even begin to define.

Homework might be routine, but tech can make it meaningful

Homework might be routine, but tech can make it meaningful | Higher Education | Scoop.it
Digital learning can also create a seamless feedback loop between teachers and students. In a non-digital environment, students complete their homework, hand it in and get it back a few days later, marked with comments that the teacher hopes they will read and absorb. This process is problematic in two ways. Firstly, if a student has misunderstood the task or found it too hard, the teacher will often not discover this until they have moved on. Not only has the learning opportunity been lost, but time has been wasted and the student may well have had a frustrating and demoralising experience. Secondly, many students just look at their mark – or the amount of red pen on the page – to find out how they have done, before sticking the work in a folder never to be looked at again.

Hackathons as a New Pedagogy

Hackathons have become a new way of doing business, creating products, advancing healthcare, and innovation. The energy is high, and so are the stakes.

No me gusta, pues.

| Higher Education | Scoop.it
