Everyone in - student insight report- UNITE | Higher education news for libraries and librarians | Scoop.it

Unite Students – the UK’s leading student accommodation provider – found that in the main, students report being satisfied with their life while at university (74%). However when split into different groups, the report uncovers communities of students who are markedly more unhappy and for whom university life appears to be more challenging.

Satisfaction in life falls to;

  • 65% for lesbian, gay and bisexual students,
  • 61% for disabled students,
  • 68 % for BAME (Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic) students
  • 70% for working class students, and
  • only 54% for students with a mental health condition.

Leading educationalist Sir Anthony Seldon and the University of Buckingham’s Dean of Psychology Alan Martin have drawn up a 10-point plan for the creation of a ‘positive university’ based on the approaches used by positive psychology and mindfulness. Sir Anthony launched the country’s first positive university at Buckingham, where he is Vice-Chancellor, earlier this year, and has now jointly written a blueprint for other higher education institutions in the UK and around the world in a pamphlet published by HEPI. The publication, HEPI Occasional Paper (18) The Positive and Mindful University, proposes a number of ways to tackle the growing problem of mental health issues among students and also staff.
