The Six Ingredients That Make eLearning Courses Relevant

The Six Ingredients That Make eLearning Courses Relevant | Higher Education India | Scoop.it

"In eLearning, creating relevant and meaningful experiences for your target audience has always been the best way to capture learners. On the contrary, if your learners have no interest in your course, the information you have sent will convey very little value and success... Much experience through trials of eLearning has identified the best way to teach students is to focus on the relevance of course material; too much theory that extends beyond the tasks they will actually be responsible for confusing the situation, or at the very least, retarding the utility of the course. When time is a premium - which it always is - the best eLearning courses make sure that the instruction that follows is directly applicable to the subsequent tasks."

An Ad Hominem Attack Against Thomas Friedman

An Ad Hominem Attack Against Thomas Friedman | Higher Education India | Scoop.it

Friedman’s columns on MOOCs read like infomercials, something made only more obvious by the fact that his most recent one is timed to the release of his “old friend” Sandel’s course. It seems as though Friedman has done precisely zero thinking about the impact MOOCs will have on education, or if he has done so, it is not in evidence in his writings on the subject. Friedman's bias for big ideas and big solutions to complex problems is well on display.

The Higher Education Bubble: Disruptive Trends to Watch in 2013

The Higher Education Bubble: Disruptive Trends to Watch in 2013 | Higher Education India | Scoop.it
Game-changing ideas that could break out in the new year.

Via Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), Deb Nystrom, REVELN Consulting, Keith Hampson PhD
Society for College and University Planning (SCUP)'s curator insight, January 13, 9:46 AM

Number four, of four, pertains:

4. Low-cost, online, competency-based learning universities. Innosight Institute Education Executive Director and Disrupting Class co-author Michael Horn noted this one. He said, "We'll see UniversityNow and others rise up and get more attention as their ultra-affordable degrees (no government dollars or loans needed) that are aligned to real work-force needs gain increasing traction in today's market. Some will take the best from MOOCs and mash them up with teachers, tutors, coaches and more to give students a complete learning experience." Horn also suggested that companies like Code Academy and DevBootcamp will increasingly provide face-to-face mechanisms that complement MOOCs. ...

It is still early enough in the development of any of these areas that market leaders in respective sectors have sufficient time to formulate response strategies. They should be doing much more than watching and analyzing however — they should be actively experimenting in the disruptive space, either through organic efforts or through investments and partnerships.

Market leaders also should ensure that they monitor a set of metrics that help them identify the acceleration or deceleration of a particular trend, because response windows can close quickly.

I'm sharing commentary from SCUP's insights below, very useful for change leadership planning.  Are you "doing much more than watching and analyzing?" — Are you "actively experimenting in the disruptive space?"

Newspapers and books and text books and weekly and monthly. And it happes because attitudes and preferences are changing.

Eric Moran's curator insight, February 5, 1:42 PM

Having lived through this era at one of the papers on this list. I can attest to much that is stated in this article. People simply digest content the way they want to now, not the way that publishers want it delivered. People now have the power to seek out the content that they want. They can now deliver, create and share content with the many tools avialable. The shift of content power will continue.

Newspapers are doing the best they can to deliver and create content to readers. The problem is, they typically resort to old methods or try to recreate something that user does not want.

New Platform Lets Professors Set Prices for Their Online Courses

New Platform Lets Professors Set Prices for Their Online Courses | Higher Education India | Scoop.it
What's your course really worth to students? A new online platform lets professors determine what services to offer and how much to charge. The new service is run by StraighterLine, a company that offers online, self-paced introductory courses. StraighterLine's courses aren't free. But tuition is lower than what traditional colleges typically charge—the company calls its pricing "ultra-affordable." Another company already trying a similar approach is Udemy, also running a platform that lets professors teach courses for personal profit—though at this point none of the company's courses are approved for college credit.
