10 Great Tools for Academic Research You Should Know about ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

10 Great Tools for Academic Research You Should Know about ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Higher Ed+Fundraising+Libraries+Technology | Scoop.it

Compared with how academic research was carried out in the pre-internet era, It seems like technology is really a godsend gift to researchers. From easy and unlimited access to journal articles to web tools that do the referencing and auto-syncing, everything has been digitized making it way easier for todays researchers to add to the body of the human knowledge than any time in history.

As a web 2.0 researcher and a graduate student in the faculty of education in Mount Saint Vincent University, I have had the chance to experiment with a wide variety of web tools that can make your academic life much more easier. Below are some of the web tools I have been recommending to undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and PHD students, and professors. Check them out below and make sure you share them with your colleagues, they could be in dire need for them.

Academic libraries have a critical role to play serving as data quality hubs on campus

Academic libraries have a critical role to play serving as data quality hubs on campus | Higher Ed+Fundraising+Libraries+Technology | Scoop.it

Michael J. Giarlo:

"Academic libraries have a critical role to play as data quality hubs on campus, based on the need for increased data quality to sustain "e-science," and on academic libraries' record of providing curation and preservation services as part of their mission to provide enduring access to cultural heritage and to support scholarly communication. Scientific data is shown to be sufficiently at risk to demonstrate a clear niche for such services to be provided. Data quality measurements are defined, and digital curation processes are explained and mapped to these measurements in order to establish that academic libraries already have sufficient competencies "in-house" to provide data quality services. Opportunities for improvement and challenges are identified as areas that are fruitful for future research and exploration.

Prepared for the NSF III #1247471 "Curating for Quality: Ensuring Data Quality to Enable New Science" workshop in Arlington, Virginia (September 2012)."

“Getting the Most out of Academic Libraries and Librarians

“Getting the Most out of Academic Libraries and Librarians | Higher Ed+Fundraising+Libraries+Technology | Scoop.it

“Getting the Most out of Academic Libraries – and Librarians”. Posted on December 10, 2011 by UT Librarians."

"Article on current levels of student proficiency at being able to assess, critically, electronic resources – nothing new, but reaffirms current views."

Carol Saller:

"The group [academic librarians] unanimously perceived a lack of skills among its clientele: Students are routinely flummoxed as to how to search for or evaluate the sources they need in their work. But even as librarians are poised to teach information technology through classes, online tutorials, and one-on-one sessions, actually laying hold of student time and attention depends on faculty support—and that is not always easy to find.

The extent to which college students are unprepared to conduct research may be surprising to those who assume that young adults are automatically proficient at any computer-related task. “Many students don’t actually know how to interpret the citations that they find in print or online, and as a result, they don’t understand what to search for,” says Georgiana McReynolds, management and social-sciences librarian at MIT. “They search for book chapters in Google because they don’t recognize a book citation compared to an article citation. Or they don’t know which is the title of the article as opposed to the title of the journal. Or they can’t decipher all the numbers that define the volume, issue, and date.”
