OECD more engaged than ever with higher education

The OECD agrees wholeheartedly that “higher education has never been more important to countries worldwide. Furthermore, academic institutions and systems are increasingly affected by global trends that require comparative analysis and international debate and can benefit from an analysis of ‘best practice’ worldwide.”

Countries outside the world's elite university systems are better at transforming research capacity into citations, a report suggests.

While the U.S. and the U.K. are good at converting research inputs into outputs and are improving, the likes of Denmark, Switzerland, France and Ireland are making the most of their resources and improving efficiency at a greater rate, the study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has found. OECD – Fees and public support for tertiary students

OECD and G20 countries vary significantly in the amount of tuition fees charged by their tertiary institutions. For instance, in eight OECD countries, public institutions charge no tuition fees, but in one-third public institutions charge annual fees in excess of US$1,500 for national students.

Countries with high levels of tuition fees tend to be those where private entities (for example, enterprises) also contribute the most to funding tertiary institutions, according to the OECD’s 2012 Education at a Glance report. This is an extract from the report. (...) - University World News

OECD countries must expand and adapt higher education

Tertiary institutions in OECD countries will need to expand the number of student places they offer, according to a just-released report from the OECD. This year more than 23 million students across OECD and G20 countries will enter their first university-level course, with entry rates in OECD nations soaring from around 40% in 1995 to 60%.

“The new generation of students will be particularly diverse, with more adults and international students than ever,” according to Education Indicators in Focus. [Germany] Higher education socially selective – Report

A nationwide survey by the German Student Welfare Service, or DSW, has found that working-class children are still strongly underrepresented in higher education, with less than a quarter gaining access to university.

Need to better prepare students for a future world

Universities need to do a better job of equipping young people to succeed in the 21st century, Andreas Schleicher, deputy director for education at the OECD, argued at the recent World Innovation Summit for Education, or WISE, in Doha, Qatar.
