[UK] Rise in student complaints against universities

Figures from 2014 reveal that more than 2,000 students submitted complaints against universities in the UK, up 3% on last year and the highest number recorded in the report's 10-year history, writes Josie Gurney-Read for The Telegraph.

The Office of the Independent Adjudicator, or OIA, reported that the highest number of complaints were made regarding academic grades and degree classifications awarded, while issues with the university and finances made up a smaller percentage of concerns. Higher education professionals have put the rise down to students "demanding more from their courses" in light of the increased fees. Writing services for academics on the rise

What drives scientists to delegate time-consuming writing tasks?

Universities and private centres in different European countries have introduced writing services for academics, in the past few decades. The trend is now catching on as the work of scientists becomes incredibly complex. More and more researchers are now happy to delegate the time-consuming task of communicating their results to professional writers and editors. Academic writing centers and learning development centres that include academic writing service have developed throughout Europe. The European academic writing centres have joined in the European Writing Centres Association that was founded in 1998 and the European Association For The Teaching Of Academic Writing.(...) [US] How Our Universities Are Failing Us

[US] How Our Universities Are Failing Us | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

The Closing of the American Mind dealt with the way academic relativism has failed our democracy, but it did not spark the kind of fruitful conversation that Allan Bloom hoped for; much less did it inspire a systematic effort to rectify the errors of modern academia. Today’s college students say they believe in democracy but cannot explain why, and neither can they explain what they are actually getting with their college education. In the past half century, higher education has gone through a democratizing revolution, with the result that more and more students are being sold an increasingly expensive product that neither their professors nor the deans and presidents of their colleges can even begin to define. [US] Visa restrictions limit academic freedom

A few months ago, New York University Professor Andrew Ross was denied entry to the United Arab Emirates, or UAE, on ideological grounds. The incident put academic freedom in the Arab World under a microscope, but the coverage failed to recognise that the US has similarly unethical restrictions for non-citizen scholars.

Each year many students, faculty and independent scholars are denied entrance to the US based on economic, national, age and other forms of discrimination. These US visa policies discriminate exclusively against citizens of Latin America, Asia, Africa and nations of Muslim majority. The US visa controls are comparable to UAE’s in their effect on academic freedom. (...) - University World News, by Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera, 17 July 2015 Issue No:376

[Australia] Universities warned to brace for 20% funding cut

Universities have been warned their funding will be cut by 20% almost immediately, an average of A$32 million (US$24 million) a university, if the federal government can get its higher education reform package through the senate by the end of the year, reports The Australian.

Despite no clear signs of support for the legislation, which has been delayed until at least the spring session of parliament, universities have been issued with a new funding formula for the 2016 academic year. (...)  - University World News, by The Australian, 03 July 2015 Issue No:374

Advice to a frustrated academic after the first year on the tenure track

Dear Kerry Ann,

We often read and hear about how much new Ph.D.s long to step into tenure-track faculty positions. I am honored to be in this role, but I find that many days I question if this is the best place for me. At the end of my first year, I am wondering: How do you know when it's time to cut your losses and seek positions outside of the academy?
