Arménie : Les étudiants protestent contre les frais de scolarité | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

UK: Should universities charge for graduation? | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it
Graduation is meant to be the proudest day of your life. Trouble is, it's also one of the most expensive.

Graduationis when you get to celebrate successfully completing a degree, and making it through three years of hard work. Yet, it seems that the emotional significance of the day is increasingly marred by the huge, up-front costs that universities ask graduates and their families to fork out. Massive open online courses, or Moocs, are likely to offer 'higher education for the masses' with fewer teachers, says Peter Scott

Strict Limits on Animal Research Stun Italian Scientists

In a major victory for animal rights activists, the Italian Parliament on Wednesday approved a bill that puts drastic limitations on animal testing. Scientists have warned that the provisions, voted by the Senate earlier this month, will severely hurt biomedical research in their country—but they haven't given up hope yet that the measures will be canceled.

“This Italian bill is brutal and is going to kill basic research,” says Roberto Caminiti, a physiologist at the University of Rome La Sapienza and chair of the Committee on Animals in Research for the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies. Opinion: Should Science Be for Sale?

Opinion: Should Science Be for Sale? | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

The increasing push to commercialize research is destroying the scientific community.

I was born in the USSR and now work as a postdoc at University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. Once, my PI and I were returning to a hotel after dinner with our collaborators in a different UK city, where one of the postdocs had the same post-Soviet background as me. My boss commented that there seems to be a lot of people of Soviet extraction working in Western science and joked that we are close to taking over it. I replied that he doesn’t have to worry; the supply of Soviet scientists is gone, never to be replaced. (...) - The Scientist Magazine, by Victoria Doronina, August 20, 2013

Free Papers Have Reached a Tipping Point, Study Claims | Science/AAAS | News | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Efforts to give the public free access to peer-reviewed papers have reached a milestone: One-half of all papers are now freely available within a year or two of publication, concludes a study funded by the European Commission and released today. That means so-called open-access publishing has reached a “tipping point” and will now accelerate, suggests Éric Archambault, the lead author of the study and president of Science-Metrix Inc. in Montreal, Canada. “Things are likely to move much faster now.” But some open-access observers have been quick to criticize the study, which yielded a number twice as high as other analyses. The challenges of higher education in Chile

Education should impart knowledge and skills as well as attitudes and values. Undeniably, there are other important objectives in education. There is not much sense in working for more equitable access or a higher retention rate if the kind of education being offered is not adequately preparing students or giving them the tools they need for the labour market.(...) - University World News, by Ignacio Sanchez, 14 August 2013 Issue No:283

USA: Will House Science Panel Need an Ethical Review?

USA: Will House Science Panel Need an Ethical Review? | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Since U.S. House of Representatives science committee Chair Lamar Smith (R-TX) subpoenaed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on 1 August for data from decades-old air pollution studies, the agency has remained silent on how it will respond. But a vehement back-and-forth has filled that silence, as the panel’s top Democrat, Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX), continues to spar with Smith over the move’s wisdom. Last week, the exchange included Johnson’s suggestion that the panel might need an independent oversight board to approve its use of sensitive data—and a letter from a researcher who claims Johnson defamed him during the fierce debate over the subpoena. Scientists have to promote their work. But they should fight the pull to oversell it, says Monika Maleszewska.

If you had asked me a few years ago what makes a scientist, I would have said curiosity. Now, after almost three years pursuing my PhD, I would probably say political skills. Genuine curiosity does indeed make a good scientist, but the ability to promote one's work makes a successful one. (...) by Monika Maleszewska, Nature 500,113 (2013), 31 July 2013
