[Malaysia] Universities bear the brunt of cuts as economy slows

Malaysia’s public universities are reeling after higher education appeared to bear the brunt of cuts announced in the 2016 budget last week. Higher education will see a decrease of MYR1.4 billion (US$325 million) compared to the previous year – a drop of some 15% from MYR15,785 billion in last year’s budget to some MYR13.3 billion. - University World News, by Yojana Sharma, 29/10/2015

Petition addressed to European Commission for more support of Social Sciences and Humanities

In November 2014 the European Parliament appointed the new European Commission on the basis of an «Agenda for Jobs, Growth, Fairness and Democratic Change”. The very title of this Agenda reveals the true challenges of the EU.

It is therefore surprising that the new European Framework Programme for Research for 2014-2020, Horizon 2020, has very little to propose in terms of “Fairness” and “Democratic Change”, or of a new approach to “Jobs and Growth” in these times of crisis. The research programme for Social Sciences and the Humanities (SSH) has disappeared and its budget been dramatically reduced compared to the previous European Framework Programme. There is no longer even a specific Directorate in charge of SSH research at the European Commission. (...) - avaaz.org

[US] Federal agencies join forces to regulate for-profit colleges

[US] Federal agencies join forces to regulate for-profit colleges | Higher Education and academic research | Scoop.it

Every few weeks, it seems, a new investigation is launched into one of the larger for-profit colleges in the country.

Or there's a new sanction or inquiry into past behavior, such as the U.S. Department of Defense's suspension of the University of Phoenix's participation in the federal tuition assistance program last week. For many who work within the for-profit sector, or advocate for consumers who attend for-profit colleges, these investigations, inquiries and sanctions are connected to an interagency task force created to oversee the institutions.
